Webb Tosses Gem, Breaks School Record as Golden Eagles Down Gannon in Regional

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – The Golden Eagle Baseball team rode a phenomenal start by senior Colt Webb, to a 1-0 victory over Gannon University in an elimination game in the Atlantic Regional.

Webb was remarkable on Friday afternoon in Millersville, as he battled in a pitcher's duel with First Team All-Atlantic Region selection Eric Sapp from Gannon. Webb, a redshirt senior from Newport, NC., tossed 9 shutout innings while striking out 10, walking just one, and allowing just three hits. He outdueled his counterpart, Eric Sapp, who allowed just four hits and one run in 9.0 innings of work as well. The gutsy performance came through three separate weather delays, the first coming just 10 minutes before first pitch. Twice, Webb and Sapp were forced to sit on the bus while the weather in the area cleared.

Both pitchers would work out of more than a few jams during their outings, but it would be just one run that was the difference. Jordan Bailey reached base safely in the first inning after a four pitch walk. He would advance to second base on a pickoff attempt that went to first and then was subsequently dropped by the Golden Knight shortstop. He would steal third a few pitches later and come around to score on an RBI fielders choice off the bat of Eric Chartier. Chartier's hustle down the first base line was ultimately the difference in the game as if he would have been called out, the run would not have scored.

Bailey reached base safely twice in the contest, both times via a walk. Tyler Dellerman, Pete Costigan, and Drew Klaserner collected doubles in the win. Only four Charleston hitters would reach base safely more than once and none would tally more than one hit. In the bottom of the 6th inning, Chartier and Klaserner reached second and third with just one away but Charleston was unable to capitalize and add any more insurance runs.

Colt Webb would lower his season ERA to 2.92 while collecting his 102nd strikeout on the season putting him ahead of Logan Campbell as the single season record holder for strikeouts at the University of Charleston.

He would close the game in the ninth after a lead off single by the Golden Knights. They would then put runners on second and third with only one out before Colt Webb worked a strikeout and a flyout to end it.

Up next, the Golden Eagles will play the loser of Millersville and East Stroudsburg tomorrow at 2:30 p.m. at Cooper Park.
