Baseball Ends Historic Season with Loss to East Stroudsburg in Regional Championship

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – The Golden Eagle baseball team saw their season come to an end on Sunday afternoon at Cooper Park in Millersville, Pa. The Golden Eagles were able to force a winner take all Championship in the NCAA Atlantic Regional after defeating East Stroudsburg 16-3 in game one. However, they would fall in the final game by a score of 6-3, ending their outstanding postseason run.

Game 1
The day would begin early between the two lowest seeded teams out of the Atlantic Region. An incoming thunderstorm moved first pitch to 10 a.m. and Charleston used the momentum from yesterday's win over Millersville to bust out 16 hits in game one.

Freshman Drew Beckner got the start on the mound in game one and performed exceptionally well. He worked 5.1 innings, allowed just three Warrior hits, struck out eight, and gave up just one run. He threw well enough to allow Charleston to take some stress off of the bullpen for game two. Freshman, Dan Kanagy came on in the 6th and earned the save, tossing 3.2 innings with a strikeout, and allowed two earned runs.

The Golden Eagles put the game out of reach in just the second inning, scoring five runs in the inning. Giano Zuccaro plated the first run with a bunt single before Jordan Bailey added another with an RBI single. Braxton Boddorf and Eric Chartier brought in two more runs with an single and a walk respectively. Drew Klaserner scored Bailey on a sacrifice fly to cap the five run inning.

ESU added a run in the fourth but UC quickly answered back with two of their own. Klaserner picked up his second and third RBI of the game with a two run single through the right side. In the fifth Eric Chartier plated a run on a single to the shortstop. The ball would be misplayed and allowed Boddorf to come around to score on the play as well. Pete Costigan was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to bring in the third run of the inning before Giano Zuccaro smoked a ball to the wall that cleared the bases. After five Charleston would lead by a score of 14-1

McCallister smoked his second home run of the season to left in the bottom of the seventh which capped the scoring at 16 for Charleston. ESU plated two runs in the top of the ninth but it would not be enough as Charleston would force the winner takes all championship game at 2:00 p.m.

Zuccaro and Bailey combined for 6 of Charleston's 16 hits and Zuccaro notched 4 RBI in the win. Zuccaro went 4-5 and scored a run, and Drew Klaserner notched 3 RBI as well.

Game 2

Charleston got on the board first with a two-run top of the first inning as it looked like the Atlantic Regional final was shaping up to be a repeat of game one. Bailey came around to score on a balk before McCallister singled home Dellerman bringing the score to 2-0. UC had a chance to add more but ESU forced a double play ball out of Pete Costigan to end the threat and keep the damage at a minimum.

The Warriors responded well in the bottom half of the inning, plating 3 runs on three hits and leaving one on base. Both teams would fail to score runs in the next two innings and ESU added one run in the bottom of the fourth making the score 4-2.

Charleston squandered a few opportunities but cashed in for one run in the top half of the fifth on a sacrifice bunt by Klaserner. It would be the final run scored for UC and ESU delivered the knockout blow after adding a two-run blast by Tyler Dunleavy.

The final three innings saw Dunleavy dominate the UC hitters as they would go 1-2-3 in the top of the 7th, 8th, and 9th innings. The game would end on a groundout by Boddorf and tapered the incredible run by Charleston in the tournament.

Four different pitchers logged innings in the loss and none went more than three innings in the Championship. Owen MacNeil, who started against Millersville on Thursday threw 2.1 innings and allowed three earned runs. Robby Shepherd allowed three earned runs while striking out 2 over 2.2 innings of work. Dane Sykes tossed 2 scoreless innings before Cole Peschl a scoreless 9th. Walks hurt the staff in the final as ESU worked 7 walks and forced UC pitching to throw over 135 pitches.

Although the season ended in a disappointing fashion, the Charleston team has little to be disappointed about in 2022. They were crowned MEC Regular Season and Tournament Champions after being picked third in their own division in the preseason poll.

Colt Webb ends his college career at UC as a First Team All-MEC selection and broke the single season strikeout record with 102 punchouts. He also threw 4 shutouts in 2022, breaking the previous single season record of 3, while logging 92.1 innings pitched, also a single season record. He tossed the ninth no-hitter in UC history and the first since 2000 against Davis & Elkins. His 10 wins on the hill ties the single season record held by Jack Brunetti from 2019. He ends his career with a 165 strikeouts, 148.0 innings pitched, and a 3.46 ERA.

Tyler Dellerman had a fanstasic season as the Golden Eagle backstop. The redshirt junior broke the single season records for RBI (67) and home runs (13). He led the team in average, RBI, sacrifice flies, OPS,

Jordan Bailey finishes his last season as a Golden Eagle with the single season stolen base record. He surpassed Colby Johnson in swipes this year in the game against Millersville and had 38 on the season. In addition, he broke Gianfranco Morello's single season runs record as he touched home 63 times in 2022. He reached base at a remarkable rate, leading eligible players with a .496 on base percentage.

Braxton Boddorf finishes his career at UC and has chosen to use his Covid year at UNC Upstate. He also eclipsed Morello's single season runs record of 52 and tallied 53 runs scored in 2022. He ended with a .374 batting average, 13 doubles, 4 triples, and 3 home runs.

Charleston will return all their starting pitchers but Webb and will have a good chance to repeat their success next season. Their 40 wins is second most all time in school history behind the 2019. They eclipsed the single season record for runs, home runs, walks, doubles, and total bases. Head coach Robbie Britt moved himself into fourth place in all time coaching wins at the University of Charleston.
