BSB: Charleston Powered Past Concord University in Conference Series

Game 1: UC 7, CU 0

Charleston, W. Va. – On Saturday, starting pitcher Owen MacNeil powered past Concord and threw a complete game to help the Golden Eagles win game one against the Concord Mountain Lions at the Welch Athletic Complex.

On the mound, MacNeil made his seventh start on the season and tossed a gem as he held Concord to two hits through seven innings of work. The Ontario native struck out 11 hitters and improved to 5-2 on the year with the win.

UC scored all seven runs in the first three innings as the Golden Eagle's offense quickly took command of the game. Charleston's Braxton Boddorf put the first run on the board after a sacrifice-fly that scored Jordan Bailey. Boddorf finished the game 1-for-3, with three RBIs, and a double. The offense continued to click as Brayden McCallister had an RBI double, scoring Kyle West.

With Charleston leading 2-0 going into the bottom of the second inning, UC tacked on three more runs. Boddorf doubled to right center, scoring Bailey and Andre Martinez. The third inning brought two more runs for the Golden Eagles with an RBI triple from Pete Costigan. Costigan then scored on a wild pitch. In all, eight Golden Eagles recorded a hit in Saturday's first game.

Game 2: UC 8, CU 1

Charleston, W. Va. – Charleston's bats exploded as seven of the eight runs were scored in the bottom of the first frame.

Tyler Dellerman, Brayden McCallister, and Pete Costigan all had two hits for the Golden Eagles and combined to drive in two of the team's eight runs. Kyle West helped lead the way with two RBIs, courtesy of a two-run blast in the first inning.

West got the party started tallying his eighth home run of the season as he put Charleston up 2-0. McCallister would continue his impressive debut as the starting right-fielder as he tripled home Braxton Boddorf later in the frame to put UC up 3-0. Pete Costigan, who notched two doubles on the day, picked up an RBI as he brought home Giano Zuccaro. The scoring in the first would be capped by a Jordan Bailey single to right field that would bring Costigan and Drew Klaserner home, running the score to 7-0 in just the first inning.

The fourth inning saw the Mountain Lions attempt to mount a comeback, but they were only able to bring in one unearned run from the bat of Daniel Layne.
McCallister continued to light it up as he doubled in the bottom of the fourth inning to bring home Boddorf once again. The double would take the score to 8-1 and neither side would score for the rest of the contest.

Bailey went 1-for-3 in the game, with one run, two RBIs, and one walk. McCallister went 2-3 with a double, a triple, and two RBI.

Starting pitcher Colt Webb allowed just one run in seven innings, giving up three hits and striking out seven on the second game of the conference doubleheader.

Game 3: UC 11, CU 0

Charleston, W. Va. – Charleston defeated Concord, 11-0 in the third game of the series against the Mountain Lions. With superb play throughout the entire game, the Golden Eagles recorded their eleventh game win this season when scoring in double-digits.

Ethan Soderna recorded his eighth win on the mound with his electric performance against the Mountain Lions. Soderna gave up six hits, only walking two, and struck out 10 hitters.

The Golden Eagles offense wasted no time getting on the board as the first four runs occurred in the bottom of the first inning. Giano Zuccaro went 2-for-4 on the game, with one run, and three RBIs. Zuccaro's single plated Tyler Dellerman and Jordan Bailey. In the same frame, Drew Klaserner double to left center field and scored Zuccaro and Brayden McCallister.

Concord was able to put together a scoring threat versus Charleston in the top of the second inning with bases loaded, however, Soderna escaped the jam with back-to-back strikeouts. The Mountain Lions got leadoff singles in the third and fourth innings but could not plate anyone before a six-run from UC in the sixth inning.

With a 5-0 lead, Charleston went into the sixth inning, adding six runs, with seven hits, and one error. This would be the final scoring from either team. Charleston took game three with a final of 11-0.

Game 4: UC 10, CU 24

Charleston, W. Va. – Concord took the final game of the series, but Charleston did not go down without a fight.

Up 13-1, the Mountain Lions had to withstand a long inning at the plate as the Golden Eagles cut the deficit down to 13-10 after four innings. After Jordan Bailey was hit-by-pitch and Tyler Dellerman walked, Braxton Boddorf hit an RBI single, scoring Jack Reisenweber. As the Golden Eagles trailed 13-4, Giano Zuccaro hit a grand slam to bring the score to 13-8. A double from Drew Klaserner plated Clay Hale and Pete Costigan.

Both teams went quietly in the fifth, however, Concord secured their margin by adding eight runs in the sixth inning. Concord added three more runs in the top of the seventh inning, and Charleston struggled to respond with no additional runs being added after the fourth inning.
Winning the Concord series had clinched a share of the MEC South Division title. This marks the fourth consecutive year that the Golden Eagles have clinched the MEC South Division.
