Golden Eagles Men's Soccer Defeat Bobcats at Home

Charleston, W.Va.- Charleston scores five goals in Sunday's victory over the Bobcats of West Virginia Wesleyan.

The Basics:
Location: Welch Athletic Complex
Score: UC 5, WVWC 1
Records: UC 4-1 (3-1 MEC), WVWC 1-1-2 (0-1-2 MEC)

How it Happened:
Charleston faced off with the Bobcats of West Virginia Wesleyan College on Sunday afternoon for a Mountain East Conference game. There was not much action on the pitch for the first twenty minutes of the match besides a West Virginia Wesleyan yellow card, but that changed in the twenty second minute. The Bobcats found themselves on the attack and Senior Sinasi Deniz was able to find the back of the net and give Wesleyan the lead.

Charleston trailed the Bobcats for about twenty minutes but in the thirty-ninth minute the Golden Eagles were awarded a penalty after a Wesleyan foul in the eighteen-yard box. Graduate student Eduardo Iranzo was the penalty taker and tied the match at 1-1 after drilling the ball past the Bobcat goalie.

The action was not done yet as Wesleyan player Charlie Naylor, who was awarded a yellow card earlier in the match, found himself being sent to the locker room as he was presented with a red card in the fortieth minute. Minutes later, Charleston capitalized on the loss of a Wesleyan defender and tallied another goal second before the end of the half. Mattheo Ledoux sent a perfect ball into the box allowing Joseph Gasper to score his first goal of the 2022 season.

It was smooth sailing for the Golden Eagles for the next fourty-five minutes. Two minutes into the half, Charleston was awarded another penalty. Senior Eduardo Barros stepped up to take this one and sent a shot right to the middle of the goal. Charleston, with now with a 3-1 lead would not let off the gas. The Golden Eagles went on to score two more goals in the match. The fourth goal coming from Forward Santiago Hoyos, and the fifth from Giorgos Diakos in the eightieth minute.

With the 5-1 victory, Charleston improves to 4-1 on the season and 3-1 in Mountain East Conference play.
