It's always a tough act to follow when you qualify for the National Championships in the previous season, and the Golden Eagles are still trying to navigate some lineup changes in the early portion of the fall season. Young talent must step up to lead the team to another National Championship berth and so far a few notable underclassmen have delivered.
Â
Pau Sanchez showed well for the Golden Eagles this weekend as he would finish atop the podium. The freshman from Barcelona, Spain concluded play tied for first overall alongside the MEC Golfer of the Year in the Spring 2022 season, Alex Easthom.
Â
Over the two-day tournament,
Sanchez played the front nine of UC's home track at -3. On Monday he would make just one bogey on the back nine on the tricky par 3 13
th hole. He followed it up with a clean front nine on Monday, scoring back-to-back birdies on holes four and five. After making a birdie on the par 3 10
th,
Sanchez carded his only double bogey of the tournament on 11, however two more birdies on 14 and 18 secured him a 69. Overall, Sanchez was -3 for the tournament, his personal best finish as a member of the UC squad.
Â
Sophomore,
Erik Ulvang, earned himself  a top 20 finish carding a 74 on Sunday and a 72 on Monday afternoon.
Ulvang took advantage of the gettable par 5s at Edgewood, shooting -4 on those holes tying him for third on the player leader board in that category. Three double bogeys for the tournament saw
Ulvang finish at +3 overall.
Â
Senior,
Zach Katzenstein, finished third for UC after playing in the fifth spot in the lineup. He would shoot 75 in both rounds, tallying five birdies in total, with four coming on the back nine.
Â
Cole Darbyshire, a senior from Tampa Florida, carded back to back 76s and finished top 50 overall. Darbyshire struggled on par 4s, playing those holes at +10 for the tournament. He would birdie four of the par fives on the weekend.
Â
Alex Verges Vila, who is looking to earn himself a spot in the starting five, came out firing on Monday afternoon. The sophomore from Barcelona finished at -4 in round one, putting together an impressive bogey-free 67. A wild front nine on Tuesday saw Verges tally three birdies, three bogeys, and a double bogey. He would finish Tuesday afternoon carding a 75 and was tied for sixth overall in the final standings. He one of just three players who played the par three under par for the weekend. Head coach Will Johnson will likely look to Verges to show a bit more consistency to break into the starting lineup for UC.
Â
Fredrik Toverud Andersen played well for UC as he competed individually in the tournament. He finished tied with his individual counterpart
Alex Verges Vila for sixth in the individual standings. The senior from Norway finished at even par for the tournament thanks to a team best six total birdies over 36 holes. On Sunday Andersen finished his round by racking up birdies on holes 3, 7, 12, and 14. He would not score worse than a bogey over 36 holes.

Last week at the Vulcan Invitational
Rory Gorman was right atop the leader board for the tournament and earned himself a spot in the starting lineup for UC's home invitational.
Gorman struggled this week however, carding a 77 on Monday and a 79 on Tuesday.
Â
UC will take leave next week but will compete in the West Liberty Invite on September 25 at Oglebay Park in Wheeling. Â
