How it Happened
With a phenomenal turnout for Charleston's homecoming matchup, the Golden Eagles were determined to take care of business on home turf.
Charleston would receive the ball after the Battlers elected to differ on the coin toss. Offensive coordinator Luke Barker and head coach Quinn Sanders have implemented a hurry-up offense this season, and it rolled like the Stones on Saturday.
The opening drive ended with a Tim McCutchen 29-yard field goal, but Charleston's offense would be right back out on the field after Willie Floyd absolutely dismantled the Battler running back, knocking the ball lose for Nirion Washington to recover which gave the Golden Eagles phenomenal territory at the Alderson Broaddus 20-yard line.
The very next play, Davis Black launched a missile to Marquan Herron in the endzone for the first touchdown of the day to go up 10-0. This was not the last time that the two players would end up in the box score.
After forcing a three-and-out, Charleston would start in Battler territory once more and take full advantage of the opportunity. After an eight-play drive led with a 16-yard reception from Javonte Howard to Niko Kausky, Chavon Wright would punch the ball in from two yards out to spread the margin to 17-0.
Charleston's defense appeared to follow a recurring theme throughout the day: force three-and-outs. They had quite a number on the day and consistently put the offense back out on the gridiron.
In the second quarter, the Golden Eagles found the endzone on a five-yard pitch and catch from Davis Black to Xzavion Gordon to extend the lead to 24-0. The drive was highlighted with a 32-yard reception from Colby Cooper that put Charleston at the five-yard line.
After a 17-yard punt return from Nirion Washington after the defense forced a three-and-out from the battlers, Tae Marrero, the freshman from Louisville, KY, was eager to find his first touchdown. On the first play of the drive, Marrero took the handoff from Black and galloped down the field for 31 yards to set the Golden Eagles up in the redzone. Following the big run, Marrero was given the ball on a wide receiver screen and his two leading blocks from Thomas Ashworth and Xzavion Gordon paved a driveway for him straight into the endzone for the freshman's first collegiate touchdown to put Charleston up 31-0.
Alderson Broaddus managed to score on a drive with two large receptions from Marvin Sims to cut the deficit to 31-7, but Charleston would get the final laugh before the halftime break. After a 40-yard 10-play drive, McCutchen drilled a 48-yard field goal as time expired to send the Golden Eagles into the locker room with a 34-7 lead.
In the third quarter, the first big play came from Roderick Webb as he picked off Levi Gullion's pass at the Battlers' 22-yard line. Putting the offense in pristine position, the first play of the drive resulted in six. Javonte Howard found Marquan Herron in the far corner of the endzone, and the redshirt freshman took care of the rest as he snagged the ball on his opposite shoulder from 21 yards out to make the score 41-7.
On the ensuing kickoff, McCutchen brought his 60-degree wedge on the field and placed the ball into no-mans-land as Charleston managed to recover the kick and put the high-rolling offense back on the field. The following drive ended in a receiving touchdown for Trey Hatcher, his first of the year; however, the pass would come from running back Chavon Wright, which would make it the first throwing score of his career.
Syeko Noble would find his first interception of the season, which led to Davis Black's fourth touchdown of the day. Black found a wide-open Yves Bosmans who, evidently, was not going to be denied of a score from 33 yards out. Powering his way through defenders, he found the endzone to extend the lead to 55-7.
The final score of the day would come from Tae Marrero, but this one would come on special teams. After a Scout Arthur punt, Marrero found his inner-Houdini and put on a show. Running to the near side, he somehow broke multiple tackles and found himself in the endzone to put up the eventual final score of 62-7.
