How It Happened
The University of Charleston looked to keep their win streak going as they moved into the second week of conference play, welcoming the Mountain Lions of Concord University into the Innovation Center for a Tuesday night matchup. Concord came into the match with a 5-11 overall record, 0-2 in conference play, after dropping two conference matches last week to West Virginia State and West Virginia Wesleyan.
Charleston was able to get on the board first with a kill by McKenzie Damon and then an attack error by Concord. There would be much more of this in the first set, as the Golden Eagles would go on to win the set 25-14 with the final point coming on a kill by Damon. The second set would be more of the same for the Golden Eagles. UC got off to another quick start in the set by winning six of the first ten points in the set including two service aces by Erin Carmody. The Golden Eagles once again dominated the set and went on to win 25-11 with back-to-back kills from Damon and Sage Bearnson to secure the set win.
The third set would be more dominance for the Golden Eagles as they would start the set by winning five of the first six points in the set. With this cushion, Charleston went on to win the set 25-16, and take the match in straight sets. UC's Damon and Bearnson were two hitters that lead the way with double-digit kills, talliying 12 kills each. Maria Hernandez tallied 40 assists, and Carmody was able to lead the way on defense, recording 23 digs.
Charleston improves to 3-0 in the Mountain East Conference and 16-2 overall.
