How it Happened:
Charleston and Notre Dame College met up for the first time this season Sunday afternoon, both squads with their eyes set on the three points up for grabs. From the start of the game, the Golden Eagles and the Falcons were even matched, with neither team dominating possession. Although both sides were awarded several free kicks and a few corners, neither team could capitalize, leaving the score 0-0.
Â
As the sun continued to shine down on the turf of the Welch Athletic Complex, Coach Daniel Smee decided it was time to make several substitutions for the Golden Eagles in the twenty-fourth minute. Less than a minute after the fresh Golden Eagle legs hit the pitch, Charleston found themselves on the attack in the eighteen. As the Golden Eagles were battling for the ball in the box, starter
Felipe Mercado capitalized on a Notre Dame defensive miscue. A Falcon defender was unable to clear the ball and the ricochet found the right foot of
Mercado as he sent the ball into the back of the net.
Â
The Golden Eagles started out the second half up 1-0, but that quickly changed. Charleston came out of the locker room hungry for another goal and in the forty-ninth minute, that is exactly what
Giorgos Diakos gave them. A routine pass from senior
Eduardo Barros assisted
Diakos perfectly to give the Golden Eagles their second goal of the game.
Â
The score would remain 2-0 for the completion of the match, giving the Golden Eagles their third victory of the season, second in MEC play.
Â
Mercado and
Diakos both picked up their first goals of the 2022 season as well as
Barros earning his first assist. Goalie
Marc Torrado continues his clean sheet, picking up another shutout on the year.
