N.C.- Charleston defeats Catawba on Wednesday night road trip to North Carolina.
The Basics:
Location: North Carolina
Score: UC 3, Catawba 0
Records: UC 7-2, Catawba 2-5
How it Happened:
The Golden Eagles returned to action for their first mid-week action of the year, making the quick trip to North Carolina to take on Catawba College. Charleston got out to a quick start by taking the first set 25-19. The teams traded points for the first fifteen points of the match, and then an attack error by Catawba, a kill by Sage Bearnson, and a block by Pia Selke and Reagan McLean gave the Golden Eagles an 11-7 lead. This run would give the Golden Eagles enough of a cushion to not surrender the lead and go on to win the set.
Set two was more of the same for the Golden Eagles, and they were able to jump out to take thirteen of the first twenty points of the set. They would go on to win the set 25-22, after a kill by Bearnson made the score 24-21, and then a service error by Catawba would give Charleston the set.
After taking the first two sets, the Golden Eagles would not look back and would go on to win the third set 25-16. With the score being 5-4, the Golden Eagles went on a 12-2 run to make the score 17-6. This was more than enough cushion for the Golden Eagles to finish out the match and take it 3-0. UC was offensively led by Bearnson, who registered ten kills. Maria Hernandez dished out twenty-six assists to lead the team. The defense was led by Madison Jackson who had thirteen digs, and McLean who registered five blocks.
