Golden Eagles Stunned On the Road By Alderson Broaddus

Philippi, W. Va – The Golden Eagles traveled for their second away game to start the new year. This battle would put them up against the Alderson Broaddus Battlers who came into this game with four losses in their last five matchups.

How it Happened
Combined between both squads, there were only 17 total points scored in the first quarter of play. Alderson Broaddus would open up the scoring with an Iyanhnna Williams mid-range jumper for the early lead. Charleston displayed struggles with shooting early on the in the ballgame after missing their first eight shots. After over three minutes, Dakota Reeves would sink a triple to end the drought, while simultaneously breaking the all-time record for the most three-pointers made in a career at Charleston. Despite the record-breaker, the Golden Eagles were unable to find a shot to go down for majority of the quarter. After Alexis Moore sank a Battler triple, they would head into the second quarter with the 10-7 lead over Charleston.

Charleston would come out and shoot 20% better from the field in the following period, but the Battlers would convert on more than half the shots that they would take, shooting 53% from the field which would allow for them to maintain their lead over the Golden Eagles. After Markyia McCormick tied the ballgame at 16-16 from the free throw line, Alderson Broaddus would put together a four-minute 14-4 run to stretch their lead to 10 with a minute remaining in the half. Trinity Palacio would knock home two free throws at the line before the break, but the Battlers would hold a 31-26 lead heading into the locker room.

The Golden Eagles, typically an explosive team after the halftime break, would be stunned with an opposing 10-4 run from the Battlers that would extend their lead to 11 points highlighted with a pair of triples. Charleston would put together 13 points in an effort to shorten the margin, but Alderson Broaddus would outscore them by just a point to maintain a 45-39 lead heading into the final quarter of play.

Charleston would convert on majority of their shots in the beginning of the period, scoring 11 points in under five minutes. Unfortunately for the Golden Eagles, the Battlers would find 10 of their own points in the same amount of time, which would only bring the margin down by a single point allowing for them to maintain a 55-50 lead. The scoring took a halt for both sides as neither side scored for the next four minutes of the final period. While this was great for Charleston to not allow the Battlers to score any points and extend their lead, they were unable to convert on the other end. With time ticking down, the Golden Eagles found a jumper from Clarrissa Francis and a triple from Reeves with 20 seconds remaining, but Alderson Broaddus would match the five points scored and take the slim 60-57 victory over Charleston.
