Golden Eagles Win Thrilling Five-Setter Over Frostburg

FROSTBURG, MD– Coming off their crucial 4-set win over West Virginia State, Charleston downs Frostburg State University in five sets to improve to 16-6 overall and 6-1 in conference play.

The Basics:
Location: Frostburg, MD
Score: 3-2 (25-22 UCWV, 25-23 UCWV, 25-23 FSU, 25-22 FSU, 15-6 UCWV)
Records: UCWV (16-6, 6-1 MEC), FSU (9-11, 1-5 MEC)

How it Happened:
In set one, Charleston captured the first two points on an attack error by Frostburg and a kill by Pia Selke, but the Bobcats went on to put four points on the board to give them a two point lead. Frostburg had a 11-5 advantage over the Golden Eagles, but Sage Bearnson strung along a seven-point service run where she enticed three Bobcat errors, collected two aces and a kill to put the Golden Eagles ahead 13-11. From there, both teams traded side-outs until Charleston came out on top 25-22, which included kills by Emma Shepherd, Riley Hoff and Selke.

Charleston jumped to an early 7-2 lead in set two on Bobcat errors, four kills by Selke and a kill by Hoff, but Frostburg knotted it at seven on a 4-point service run. The set went back-and-forth until the Golden Eagles snagged the frame on kills by Selke and Shepherd.

The Golden Eagles fell to Frostburg in sets two and three in a close matchup, but they bounced back and dominated the Bobcats in the final frame of the game to give them the five set victory. The final frame started with FSU scoring the first point on a service ace, however UC picked up the next four on a service ace of their own and errors by the Bobcats. The Golden Eagles powered through the rest of the set, defeating the Bobcats 15-6 with kills by Shepherd and Bearnson.

Hoff, Bearnson and Shepherd secured 40 kills in total to power the Golden Eagles offense, while Hoff and Reagan McLean led the defense with 15 digs by Hoff and eight blocks by McLean.
