Glenville, W. Va – After winning four straight contests to begin the year, the Golden Eagles hit the road for a highly anticipated matchup with the Glenville State Pioneers. The Pioneers had only dropped one game this season to West Virginia State coming into this matchup; they also handed the five-time reigning MEC Champions their first loss of the year.
The Basics
Location: I.L. & Sue Morris Stadium
Score: UC 52, GSU 17
Records: UC 5-0 (4-0 MEC), GSU 3-2 (1-2 MEC)
How it Happened
The first quarter would be filled with tremendous defense from the Golden Eagles as they would force not only a three-and-out on the opening possession, but they would force a turnover-on-downs from the Pioneers after they consequentially went for it on 4
th and 2 from their own 33-yard line. Despite no points from the great field position, Charleston would put up another valiant effort on fourth down; this time from their own two. Glenville State would march down the field, but Charleston would prove themselves after the 17-play drive and give their offense the ball back after forcing an incompletion. Charleston would stall on their next possession and the game would move to the second quarter with both sides tied at zero.
With the Pioneers knocking on the door once again in the redzone, Dekavis Preston would extinguish the threat with an interception in the endzone to give Charleston the ball with the momentum. The Golden Eagles would find the balance they sought after on offense and drive down to the Pioneer 22-yard line. Javonte Howard would find his first passing score of the day to Marquan Herron for 22 yards on a one-handed grab for the hard-earned 7-0 lead. Glenville State would find the points they were looking for on the next drive, but it would be a three-pointer from Brody Layman to cut the lead to four.
Charleston would match their field goal with one of their own on a 32-yarder from Tim McCutchen to give Charleston the seven-point lead back. With 2:53 on the clock, Charleston would find another possession before the half and find another throwing score to Yves Bosmans from 36 yards out to give the visitors a 17-3 lead. PK Ackah-Yensu, however, was not satisfied with 17 points and wanted to give Charleston another possession. He would strip Anthony Garrett of the ball as he ran to his left and Nesta Owens would recover the ball deep in Glenville territory. Charleston would score with a nifty pitch-and-catch from Chavon Wright to Alex Brink for the 24-3 lead, but they were not done just yet.
Aden Miller would intercept a throw from Garrett and run it all the way back to the house giving Charleston a quick 31-3 lead, which they would finally take into the locker room.
The Golden Eagles would receive the ball in the second half and waste no time finding the endzone on a pass from Howard to Tae Marrero who somehow got through four defenders and gave Charleston a 38-3 advantage. Later, Wright would find his first rushing score of the day in a scrum at the goal line that would be assisted by the offensive line pushing his way into the endzone for the 45-3 lead midway through the third quarter.
In the fourth quarter, Charleston's final score of the day would come from Wright once again doing what he does best and bulldozing his way into the promise land for the 52-3 lead. With 12:41 left in the game, Glenville State would find two scores, but there would not be enough time to make a late comeback and Charleston took the road win by a final score of 52-17.
