Glenville, W. Va – The 15
th ranked Golden Eagles took the trip to Frostburg, MD for one of their biggest MEC matchups to date. They took on the Frostburg State Bobcats under the lights looking to remain undefeated on the year.
The Basics
Location: Bobcat Stadium
Score: UC 1, FSU 0
Records: UC 7-0-2 (6-0-1 MEC), FSU 8-1-0 (5-1-0 MEC)
How it Happened
Back and forth the teams went through the first 45 minutes of play, but neither side was able to get ahead of their opponent. Charleston would put the pressure on the Bobcats with 11 shots with five of them on target, but they were unable to find the back of the net. Frostburg State was limited to just four shots in the half with three on goal with Jordan Maynard would not allow her time to play from behind. Carina Widauer had a curling shot aimed towards the lower left corner in the 15
th minute but was deflected off the keeper.
It wouldn't be until the second half that Charleston would take the advantage off of a penalty kick. In the 62
ndminute, the Golden Eagles would charge towards the goal and Michelle Wenger would be taken down inside the box by Lela Clark. Laura Vierhout would pick her spot and deliver her shot into the bottom left corner. Frostburg State's keeper Ashley Bilger chose the correct direction, but Vierhout's shot had too much pace for a strong enough deflection and Charleston found the go-ahead score.
Despite 12 shots in the second half, the Golden Eagles would leave Maryland with the 1-0 victory over a very talented Frostburg State squad. Although the teams will not face each other again in the regular season, they could be a team Charleston may see again later on in the year.
