Golden Eagles Fall to Cardinals in Three

WHEELING, W. Va.— University of Charleston Women's Volleyball (19-8, 8-3 MEC) falls on the road to Wheeling University (19-6, 10-1 MEC) in straight sets.

The Basics:
Location: Wheeling, WV
Score: 3-0 WU (25-15 WU, 25-10 WU, 25-18 WU)

How it Happened:
Senior Maria Hernandez powered in a service ace to start the Golden Eagles off strong in the first set of the game, but the Cardinals quickly evened the score out on a kill. Both teams traded sideouts until Charleston began to trail Wheeling on a three-point Cardinal service run. UC showcased kills by Patrycja Majos, Emma Shepherd, Mai-Lani Hernandez, Pia Selke, Reagan McLean and Sage Bearnson in set one, but they came up short, dropping the set 25-15.

Charleston lacked momentum in the second frame, as Wheeling jolted to a 6-0 lead on Golden Eagle attack errors and kills by the Cardinals. UC managed to put points up on the scoreboard here and there on Wheeling errors and kills by Bearnson, Shepherd, and Riley Hoff, but they continued to trail throughout the set. Wheeling defeated Charleston 25-10 to give them a 2-0 advantage going into the next frame.

Wheeling also jumped to an early 13-3 lead in the third set, but Charleston played catch-up on two straight service aces by Shepherd, two kills by Hoff and four straight Golden Eagle kills by Selke, Bearnson and Maria Hernandez. The comeback was not enough though, as Wheeling went on to win the final set of the day 25-18.
