Charleston Overpowers Davis & Elkins in Straight Set Victory

CHARLESTON, W.Va.—The Golden Eagles (20-8, 9-3 MEC) picked up another straight set victory on Halloween, defeating the Davis & Elkins Senators (1-22, 0-11 MEC) 25-13 in all three sets.

The Basics:
Location: Charleston, W. Va.
Score: 3-0 UCWV (25-13 UCWV, 25-13 UCWV, 25-13 UCWV)

How it Happened:
The University of Charleston Golden Eagles started the game off with a kill by Riley Hoff and three straight Davis & Elkins errors. Charleston quickly stretched their lead to 10-3 on two straight service aces by Pia Selke, a kill by Reagan McLean and three more Senator errors. D&E would sneak a point in here-and-there on kills and Golden Eagle mistakes, but they were unable to catch up, as Hoff collected another kill and Emma Shepherd collected three service aces on a four-point service run. The Golden Eagles eventually won the set 25-13 an attack error by the Senators.

Unlike the first set, set two started as a close matchup, but Charleston pulled ahead 3-2 on an attack error by D&E and two kills by Sage Bearnson and Selke. The Senators closely trailed the Golden Eagles until UC extended their lead to 11 points with kills by McLean, Hoff, Bearnson and Shepherd. Charleston secured the second set victory on another kill slotted in by Hoff. Like set one, they won the frame 25-13.

The Golden Eagles rocketed to a quick 8-0 lead in the third frame on a 8-point service run by Maria Hernandez with kills by Selke, McLean and Hoff. Charleston did not let up through the match, picking up more kills by Shepherd and capitalizing on Davis & Elkins errors. They also defeated the Senators 25-13 in set three to secure the straight set win.

Riley Hoff and Emma Shepherd led the Golden Eagles offense, as Hoff pounded in 11 kills while Shepherd had eight and three service aces. Reagan McLean, Pia Selke and Shepherd acted as a wall with McLean and Selke blocking three Senator kills and Shepherd blocking two. Abby Avila and Hernandez had a total of 30 assists.
