Charleston Adances to Sweet Sixteen with 7-0 Victory Over Queens College

Charleston, W.Va. – The University of Charleston Golden Eagles defeated the Queens College Knights 7-0 to progress in the NCAA tournament.

The Basics
Location: Welch Athletic Complex
Score: UC 7-0 Queens
Records: UC 19-1-0, Queens 12-8-2

How It Happened
In the final home game of the men's soccer program's season, the Golden Eagles ran out comfortable winners to reach the sweet sixteen of the national tournament.

With fourteen minutes on the clock, Jose Suarez Monaco was found by Joao Belmudes before placing a curling effort into the top left corner to break the deadlock and put UC 1-0 to the good. Not long after that, Giorgos Diakos got in on the act as Belmudes got his second assist of the evening; Diakos squeezing the ball in the near post past the outstretched Knights keeper. Less than ten minutes later, Diakos had doubled his tally after sending a 25 yard strike into the bottom left hand corner to make it 3-0. Eduardo Barros made it four just before half time, finding himself in the right place at the right time as Belmudes earlier effort hit the post and made its way to him.

Into the second half and the Golden Eagles showed no sign of letting up. Just five minutes in, Diakos secured the match ball by converting a penalty won by Stafford Dowling, completing his hat trick. In the process, Adolfo Martinez Paquet was shown a straight red for the foul leading to the penalty. Dowling then got on the scoresheet himself, playing an innocuous one-two with Barros before finishing cooly, and then Barros got his second to round out a pleasant evening for the hosts and they go into the round of sixteen full of confidence.
