Golden Eagles Defeated in First MEC Matchup of the Year

Athens, W. Va – Charleston hit the road on Saturday to face the Concord Mountain Lions for their first Mountain East Conference of the campaign. Last season, the Golden Eagles outscored the Mountain Lions 152-125 in two regular season wins for Charleston. The Golden Eagles also ended Concord' season last March in the semifinal of the Mountain East Conference Tournament at WesBanco Arena.

The Basics
Location: Carter Center
Score: UC 44, CU 54
Records: UC 1-3 (0-1 MEC), CU 2-2 (1-0 MEC)

How it Happened
The Mountain Lions would put up a dominant first quarter in the Carter Center, putting up 6-11 of their shots and limiting the Golden Eagles to just four points off of two baskets from Nia Vanzant and Haley Moore. They would hold a 13-4 lead over Charleston going into the second quarter after finishing the first period on a 7-0 run. In the second quarter, the Golden Eagles would quadruple their first quarter total and add on 16 points throughout the period, shooting 50% from the field and 2-3 from beyond the arc. Concord would remain consistent on the other end of the court and put up five shots in the perimeter and a bucket from distance to total 14 points in the quarter and take a 27-20 lead into the halftime break.

Despite shooting 33% from the field in the third quarter after the break, the Golden Eagles would find six easy points from the free throw line and claw their way back into the ball game. The Mountain Lions hit struggles offensively shooting 16% from the floor and just two charity stripe shots to total six points in the quarter. At the end of the quarter, Paris Stokes' pair of free throws would give Charleston their first lead of the night at 34-33 going into the final period. It would be back-and-forth play to begin the period with five points coming from Charleston's Clarrissa Francis and six from the Mountain Lions; however, it would be a 13-5 run from Concord that stood as the final laugh from either side as Charleston would fall on the road 54-44 to the Mountain Lions.
