How it Happened
It would be the Golden Eagles capitalizing off of turnovers throughout the matchup, as they would score 31 points off of 23 turnovers forced by head coach Tianni Kelly's squad. Charleston would jump out to an 8-0 lead just two minutes into the game, forcing an early timeout by the Wasps after a triple from distance by Nia Vanzant. The timeout would prove to be ineffective as the Golden Eagles would go on to outscore the Wasps 12-10 for the duration of the period to take a 20-10 lead into the second quarter.
Kiara Cruz would extend the Charleston lead to begin the second quarter with a shot from beyond the arc for the 23-10 advantage, followed by another triple from Jamia Nesmith just 30 seconds after. The Golden Eagles took advantage of their ability to hit the deep ball, knocking home six three-pointers in the half while also shooting 41% from the field. After Clarrissa Francis' three-pointer with time winding down in the half, the Golden Eagles would sprint into the locker room with their largest lead of the night at 43-29.
Emory & Henry would attempt to close the deficit in the opening period after the halftime break with a 19-point performance in the third quarter, but the fourth quarter would display Charleston's ability to shoot and seal the win. Charleston would not only shoot 83% from the field, but they would hit 4-5 crushing three-pointers. The Golden Eagles would take the rest of the quarter to cruise to the 86-63 victory at home over Emory & Henry.
Charleston's Nia Vanzant would have herself a night, finishing with 23 points, three takeaways and four assists. Well-known veteran Clarrissa Francis would also prove to be a difference in the game, hitting 8-10 of her shots and contributing three steals.
