Golden Eagles Prevail Over Fighting Falcons

CHARLESTON, W. Va. — Men's Basketball secured their fifth win of the season Saturday afternoon, downing Fairmont State University with a score of 77-72. The Golden Eagles move to 5-1 on the season and 4-0 in conference play with this victory.

The Basics:

How it Happened:
Eddie Colbert III put the Golden Eagles on the board first with a layup and a triple on the team's first possessions. A few minutes later, the Fighting Falcons followed Charleston's scoring up with a jump shot, but the Golden Eagles kept answering back with buckets of their own from Colbert III, Dwaine Jones, and Tyler Eberhart. Fairmont eventually caught up to Charleston, knotting the score at 14 on a string of free throws, layups and jump shots. Both teams traded buckets until UC jumped in front 25-20 on a Barker DeAirius layup assisted by Colbert III and a trey by Dwaine Jones assisted by Shunta Wilson. UC closed out the half leading Fairmont 33-32.

Keaton Turner and Jones connected to start the second half off strong for Charleston, as Turner sunk a triple in to put UC ahead 36-32. Fairmont followed Charleston closely and eventually pulled ahead and extended their lead on two three-pointers of their own, making the score 42-41. The Golden Eagles regained their lead on a layup by Barker and a three-pointer by Colbert III. UC kept adding points to the board, but Fairmont crawled back yet again to even the score at 52. Charleston went on another scoring run that featured baskets from Turner, CJ Meredith, Colbert III and Jones. Fairmont continued to fight though, tying the score at 66. From there, the teams traded baskets until UC jumped in front 75-69 on a Barker triple assisted by Jones. Charleston concluded the game on two free throws by Barker, making the score 77-72.

Eddie Colbert III led the Golden Eagles to victory shooting 7-9 from the floor with 19 points, six rebounds, two blocks and an assist. Shunta Wilson also performed well defensively with two blocks, a steal and five rebounds.

The Golden Eagles will face West Liberty University (7-0, 3-0 MEC) at home in the Wehrle Innovation Center at 7:30pm on Saturday, December 2.
