Charleston, W. Va – Golden Eagle Baseball finished up their three game series against Bloomsburg, taking a 7-3 victory on Sunday to sweep the series.
After winning the series on Saturday, Charleston looked for a sweep in their 9-inning series finale against a highly ranked regional opponent in Bloomsburg.
On the bump in game three stood transfer
Dwayne Sumler. The senior worked 3.1 innings in the start, allowing two runs on five hits while walking three.
A slew of arms would do well in the 5.2 innings required to finish the contest.
Austin Dzierwa entered in relief of Sumler facing a 1
st and 3
rd situation with only one out. Dzierwa carved his way through the first batter, striking out Bloomsburg's Chasanov in three pitches before inducing a ground ball to end the inning. He ended his outing in the 5
th allowing just one earned run.
Campbell Spradling relieved Dzierwa and pitched into the 6
th before giving way to the pitcher of record
Andrew Gormley. For the second time in as many days Gormley would get credit with the win after Charleston took the lead in the bottom of the 6
th.
Bloomsburg drew first blood in the first inning scoring one run on two hits but stranding two. Charleston answered in the home half of the 3
rd scratching across one run thanks to a few key errors by the Huskies in the infield.
Both teams exchanged runs in the 4
th, Bloomsburg plating one in the top and Charleston scoring on back-to-back doubles by
Giano Zuccaro and
Evan Ulrich.
UC relinquished the lead once again in the 5
th allowing one run on one hit but stranding two runners. A big top of the sixth inning earned back the lead and would be the deciding factor in the contest.
Andre Martinez reached on a bunt single with the bases loaded and brought home
JD Armstrong from third. A bases loaded walk to
Brayden McCallister plated one more run before a 2-RBI single by
Tyler Dellerman capped the scoring in the frame.
Charleston added one more insurance run in the 7
th as Evan Ulrich brought home Armstrong from third on a single through the 5-6 hole.
Reliever
Sam Slodic logged his first innings as a Golden Eagle and was credited with the three-inning save. Slodic allowed just one baserunner in his three innings of work while striking out six.
Zuccaro led the team with three hits and two runs while walking once.
Ulrich and
Martinez both tallied two hits and Martinez scored twice.
Armstrong reached base three times, scored two runs, and stole a base.
The bottom of the order produced well throughout the weekend and did especially well on Sunday, recording eight of Charleston's nine hits on the day.
The Golden Eagles return to action next Friday as they host Ohio Dominican in a single 9-inning game at the Welch Athletic Complex, followed by a double-header on Saturday. First pitch is set for Friday at 1:00 pm.
