Charleston, W. Va – Golden Eagle Baseball split two games on Saturday afternoon with Ohio Dominican, falling in game two 6-1 and winning game two 10-5.
Game One – Charleston 1, Ohio Dominican 6
Defense was a problem all day for Charleston as they committed seven total errors on the day with four coming in game one.
The troubles on defense started in the first inning of game two. After two quick outs, an error allowed Michael Knapp to reach and he came around to score on an ODU double just one batter later.
Charleston tied the score at 1 in the bottom of the 2
nd,
Giano Zuccaro reached second base on a leadoff double and swiftly stole third. He was brought in on a sacrifice fly by
Clay Hale just a few pitches later. It would be the only run scored by the Golden Eagles in game two.
Ohio Dominican scratched across two runs on two hits in the top of the 5
th. A few defensive miscues allowed extra runners to reach base that cost Charleston some valuable pitches.
UC threatened in the bottom half of the 5
th. With runners on second and third and only one out
Tyler Dellerman was hit by a pitch, setting the stage for
Kyle West to possibly tie the game with a hit. However, lefty reliever Myles Martinez from ODU rolled a double play to end the inning with no damage done.
The momentum stayed on the side of the Panthers after the missed opportunity from Charleston. They plated three more runs in the 6
th to put the game out of reach.
UC scraped together two hits in the first game of the double header. They would walk five times but stranded six runners on base.
Dane Sykes got the loss on the bump going 4.1 innings allwoing three runs, two earned, six hits and walking five. He fanned three Panthers in the outing.
Game Two – Charleston 11, Ohio Dominican 6
Game two was a different story entirely on offense for Charleston. They pounded out 9 hits and scored 11 once again with three errors in the contest.
For the first time in the series Charleston took an early lead. Series MVP
Zuccaro got the run scoring started in the bottom of the 1
st inning as he singled home West on a hard hit ball over the shortstop.
After allowing an unearned run in the 4
th, Charleston added five runs in the bottom of the frame.
JD Armstrong had the only hit of the inning, a leadoff triple to right. He scored on a walk from Andre Martinez, before ODU pitchers walked two more runs in with the bases loaded without recording an out.
Brayden McCallister brought home a run on a ground out and Dellerman capped the scoring with a sacrifice fly to left.
A slew of bad defense allowed the Panthers to scratch across four runs in the 6
th inning. Charleston added four more runs of their own in the 7
th, with RBIs coming from
Armstrong,
Zuccaro,
Klaserner, and
Martinez.
West capped the scoring at 11 in the 8
th inning, doubling home Evan Ulrich on a missile into the left center gap.
On the bump,
Dwayne Sumler earned his first win as a Golden Eagle. He went 5.1 innings, allowed five runs, three of which were earned runs, allowed three hits, walked three and struck out six.
Cole Peschl got the three inning save, striking out two and allowing just one unearned run.
Seven different Charleston hitters scored in the ball game. West and Zuccaro both had two hits and a double. Zuccaro went 2-3 with two RBI, two runs scored and a hit by pitch. West was 2-3 with two walks, an RBI and two runs scored. Armstrong was 3-5 with a triple, an RBI, and two runs.
Charleston picked up a midweek game against Lincoln Memorial this week on Tuesday, February 28. First pitch will be at 3:00 pm.
