Charleston, W. Va – The Golden Eagle Baseball team finished up their out of conference schedule on Saturday, March 11 by defeating the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown in both ends of a doubleheader. They swept the weekend, scoring a combined 27 runs over the three game set.
Game One – UC 5, UPJ 4
Charleston used some timely hitting in game one of the doubleheader, tallying five runs on just four hits to take game two of the series.
Drew Beckner opened the scoring for UC with an RBI groundout to second with runners on first and third, scoring Andre Martinez.
The Mountain Cats scored three runs off of starter
Dane Sykes in the 3
rd.
He surrended a leadoff triple to Jake Ansell who would come around to score on a single by Alex Glumac. He got two straight outs, looking to quell the rally and keep the score tied at one. However, back-to-back walks loaded the bases and Evan Beach tacked on two more runs with a 2RBI single to left.
Sykes was able to get through 4.2 innings of work. He allowed five hits four runs and five walks while fanning five UPJ hitters.
In the fifth he was relieved by
Robby Shepherd who entered into a bases loaded situation and promptly struck out the first hitter he faced to end the threat.
Trailing 4-3 heading into the bottom of the 5
th, UC responded with two runs to take the lead at 5-4. Charleston had three straight hits from the top three hitters in the order.
Kyle West scored
Giano Zuccaro on a single to tie the score at four. What would be the winning run unceremoniously scored when
Tyler Dellerman touched home on a bases loaded balk by UPJ pitcher Shultz.
Tad Dean relieved
Shepherd in the top of the 6
th, snuffing out a threat an impending threat from the Mountain Cats.
Caleb Rush earned the save, his first of the season, pitching a flawless 7
th inning while striking out one.
Beckner was 1-2 with a walk and three RBI to lead UC on offense.
Game Two – UC 17, UPJ 3
The offense exploded in game two of the day and the series finale. Charleston cracked off 17 runs on 16 hits while working 12 free passes in the win.
The Golden Eagles took a lead from the start, jumping out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning.
Dellerman highlighted the scoring with an RBI double for the first run of the game.
Dellerman added another run in the 2
nd inning, hitting a no doubt home run to left for his fourth long ball of the season.
Martinez added another run in the 2
nd, scoring
West to run the count to 5-0.
Starter
Dwayne Sumler allowed the only run of his outing in the 4
th, giving up his first and only hit of the start. He day ended in the 6
th as he tossed 5+ innings allowing one hit, one run, striking out four, and walking two. He also got his second win on the mound, moving his record to 2-1 overall.
Charleston knocked in three more in the 4
th inning.
Will Glazebrook tripled home a pair before
Clay Hale scored one on a single through the right side to make the score 8-1 after four.
In the 5
th Dellerman and Martinez plated three runs on singles to right and left field respectively.
Martinez added another run in the 7
th inning, his fourth hit of the game, increasing the lead to 12-3. He ended his day leading the offense with four hits, a double, four runs, four RBI, a walk and a stolen base.
Ty Foree plated a pair in the 7
th as well, picking up his first collegiate hit and RBIs in the process.
The scoring concluded with a three run 8
th inning.
Drew Klaserner doubled home two and
Gabe Bates added a run on an RBI double down the left field line. It would mark Bates' first collegiate hit and RBI as well.
Austin Dzierwa pitched two innings without allowing a hit. He fanned three and allowed one earned.
Zane Lattig and
Owen MacNeil combined to finish the game, throwing an inning each. Neither allowed a hit or a run and Lattig struck out one Mountain Cat.
Charleston improved to 12-4 on the season. They were perfect against PSAC opponents this year, sweeping both Pitt Johnstown and Bloomsburg. They have a stellar home record at 12-1 and will enter conference play with a four game series on Saturday and Sunday against Wheeling and West Liberty.
