Soderna Shoves in Game One, Dellerman's Clutch Grand Slam Lifts Golden Eagles in Game Two Over Cedarville

Charleston, W. Va – Baseball took both ends of a Saturday doubleheader against visiting Cedarville, improving their season record to 8-4. Pitching highlighted game one and a late inning go ahead grand slam by Tyler Dellerman was the story of game two.

Game One – Charleston 3, Cedarville 1

On the hill in game one was ace Ethan Soderna. The grad transfer pitched well, going 5.0 innings for the second straight week. He allowed just one earned run, coming in his last inning of work. He finished the outing allowing five hits while striking out five and walking none, the first time he has not surrendered a base on balls this season during a start.

UC scored two runs in the 2nd inning, the first coming from an AJ Karosas RBI single through the first base side. The second came when Cedarville starter Tanner Gillis balked home a run with the bases loaded.

The Yellow Jackets added their only run in the top of five, Rotello scoring Seth Hale on a single to right.

Tyler Dellerman scored the final run of the contest in the 5th, coming around to score on an RBI single from JD Armstrong.

Cole Peschl entered in the 6th pitching two scoreless innings and notching his second save of the year. He faced eight batters, struck out two, allowed two hits and one walk.

Drew Klaserner was 1-1 in the series opener, walking twice, scoring once and hitting his first three bagger of the season in the 4th inning.

Game Two – Charleston 7, Cedarville 4

Game two saw Charleston struggle at the plate for seven straight innings and then explode in the 8th.

Dane Sykes was given the nod in game two and he was solid. The junior right hander worked 6.0 innings, the longest outing of his season, striking out seven, walking one and allowing two earned.

Andrew Gormley entered in the top of the 7th and gave up an earned run in both the 7th and 8th inning.

Down 4-0 Tad Dean entered with one out in the 8th and cleaned up the mess. He finished with the win, going 1.2, fanning two and allowing one hit without giving up an earned run.

The big story for UC came in the bottom of the 8th. The first four batters of the inning reached base. Will Glazebrook had a pinch hit 2-RBI double that opened the scoring. He came around to score on a single from Andre Martinez one batter later.

Clay Hale and Drew Beckner both walked to load the bases with one out, Charleston down by a run. The early season MVP on offense Giano Zuccaro unfortunately flew out to left for the second out of the inning without scoring a run.

That would be a moot point in the end because Preseason All-America selection Dellerman cleared the bases with one swing, depositing a ball over the center field fence for a grand slam. It was the second game tying or go ahead RBI for Dellerman in the 8th inning for the week. He also tied the game at three against Lincoln Memorial on Tuesday evening.

The late rally deflated the Yellow Jackets and Dean closed the game in the top of the 9th with a clean inning.

The late rally was enough to give the Golden Eagles their fifth straight win. They will look to win the series on Sunday against the Yellow Jackets. First pitch is set for 4:30 pm.
