Athens, W. Va – The Charleston Baseball team took both ends of a Sunday doubleheader against Concord University to take a three-game lead in the Mountain East Conference South Division Standings. The Golden Eagles hit six home runs in the doubleheader and tallied 50 runs in the series.
Game One – Charleston 12, Concord 5
For the second time in the series, Charleston got on the board first.
Kyle West bounced back from a hitless game two and went 4 for 4 with a home and three doubles. The two run homer came in the first inning and gave Charleston a 2-0 lead.
Concord scored three in the bottom of the first to take the lead back 3-2. Chris Satcher blasted a three-run homer to left and the very next inning Kyle Keenan extended the lead to 5-2 with a home run of his own.
The two home runs would be the only runs scored off starter
Dane Sykes, after the second inning. He allowed just three baserunners after that inning and would finish the game with 11 strikeouts and his first complete game win of the season.
The Golden Eagles scored one run in the fourth and then exploded for four runs in the fifth and five runs in the sixth.
Giano Zuccaro brought home West on a sacrifice fly in the fourth.
AJ Karosas scored two on a throwing error before
West singled him home to give Charleston a 6-5 lead in the fifth. A bunt single from
Andre Martinez made it 7-5 after five.
Karosas hit his second home run as a Golden Eagle in the top of the sixth. The three run blast gave the Golden Eagles a 10-5 lead.
West doubled home
Drew Klaserner to make it 11-5 and
Martinez capped the scoring at 12 with an RBI groundout in the sixth.
Klaserner went 2 for 4 with two runs and two stolen bases.
Clay Hale and
Drew Beckner each had a hit, a walk and a run.
Game Two – Charleston 18, Concord 4
The pitching staff held the prolific Concord offense to just four runs in the series finale.
Andrew Gormley allowed four runs with just three being earned in 3.2 innings. The freshman allowed seven hits, walked three and struck out two in his start.
Cody Godbold entered in relief in the fourth and worked 2.1 scoreless innings with two strikeouts.
After scoring four runs in the first inning Charleston tied it up in the second. Hale smacked his seventh homer of the year in the inning, a three three run blast cut the lead to one. Klaserner tied the game a few batters later with an RBI safety squeeze bunt.
Charleston added took the lead in the fourth on an RBI single from West. The lead was extended to 9-4 after a two-RBI single from Martinez and a two run double from Zuccaro.
The Golden Eagles tallied two and six runs in the fifth and six innings respectively. Scoring was highlighted by a
Carter Rust two run blast and Kyle West team leading 17
th home run of the season.
Hector Carreon-Herrara homered in the final inning to take a 18-4 finish scoring in the seventh.
Tad Dean slammed the door in the seventh by striking out the only three batters he faced.
West was 3 for 4 with a home run, a walk, three RBI, and two runs and currently leads the MEC in batting average at .409. Zuccaro went 3 for 3 with a double two RBI, and two runs. Karosas was 3 for 5 with an RBI and two runs.
The Golden Eagles improved to 36-8 overall and 24-4 in Mountain East Conference play. They also remain at No. 3 in the Atlantic Region according to the latest NCBWA poll.
Charleston finishes the regular season in a four-game set on Friday and Sunday against West Virginia State. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. on Friday.
