Charleston Sweeps Frostburg to Clinch MEC South Division Title

Charleston, W.Va.- For the first time since 2016, University of Charleston Softball has been named the Mountain East Conference (MEC) South Division Champions. With a conference record of 27-5, the Golden Eagles finish with the best overall record in the MEC to clinch the No. 1 seed in the MEC Tournament.

Charleston defeated Frostburg State 7-2 in game one and 1-0 in game two to finish off the season.

Highlights:
Hannah Rose picked up two hits and two runs in game one to tie the UC single-season record for runs scored (60). This record was previously set by Sue Goldcamp in 1978.

Isabella Andujar went 4-for-5 on the day with a double, two runs-batted-in (RBI) and two walks, while Jeritza Montero went 1-for-4 with two RBIs and one run scored on a single, a sacrifice bunt and a hit-by-pitch. Pinch hitter Brittny Ogg drove in the winning run in game two in the bottom of the fifth inning with a double to left-center.

Game One: 7 UC, 2 FSU
Junior starting pitcher Brianna McCown (21-3) worked hard to tightrope out of trouble, with Frostburg managing to score only two runs on 11 hits, two walks and two hit-by-pitches. The Bobcats left 14 runners stranded, as McCown punched out seven in seven innings pitched.

The Golden Eagles offense was led by Andujar, who went 3-for-3 at the plate with a double, two runs-batted-in (RBI), one run scored and a walk. Allysa Lake and Emma Groe also had doubles, with Lake going 1-for-4 with a run scored and Groe going 1-for-3 with an RBI.

Game Two: 1 UC, 0 FSU
Danielle Bauer (11-4) adds another win to the win column with a shutout victory over Frostburg. The senior collected seven strikeouts in seven innings pitched while allowing only three hits.

Game two was a pitching duel, but the bottom of the fifth inning was pivotal for the Golden Eagles. Super senior Brionna Bowman started the frame off strong by showing her wheels off as she reached first safely on a single to shortstop. Eventually, she made her way to second on a sacrifice bunt by Lake. With a runner in scoring position and one out, Brittny Ogg stepped up to the plate as a pinch hitter. The sophomore clutched up and drove in the lone run of the ballgame on a double to left-center.
