Charleston, W. Va – Golden Eagle Baseball stayed alive in the Mountain East Conference Tournament with another decisive victory, this time against Wheeling University. The offense hit three home runs and totaled seven extra base hits in the contest.
Senior
Clay Hale has been tearing it up so far this tournament. The left handed swinging senior 7 for 14 with five doubles, two walks, a home run, 10 runs batted in, and five runs. He opened the scoring for Charleston in the top of the third inning, hitting a no doubt grand slam home run to right field. He would finish the game 2 for 5 with four RBI and two runs.
Dwayne Sumler toed the rubber to begin the game and was solid in his outing, surrendering no runs through four innings while striking out six.
Cody Godbold got the win on the mound and improved his record to 5-0. The freshman threw two scoreless innings while allowing just one baserunner and fanning one.
Zane Lattig earned his first save of the season after pitching the final three innings to preserve the pitching staff for tomorrow's game and potentially multiple games.
The Golden Eagles tallied four runs in both the third and fifth innings. In the sixth,
Andre Martinez increased the lead to 9-0 by launching his third home run of the season to left. He finished the game 3 for 5 with a couple of RBI and three runs.
Martinez has been lighting up opposing pitchers in Charleston's tournament run. He is 7 for 14 with a double, a home run, three walks, five RBI, and six runs in three games.
Carter Rust launched a solo home run of his own in the eighth to bring the score to 10-2. The freshman right fielder was 1 for 3 with two runs and three walks.
A six-run ninth inning would put the exclamation point on the win and was highlighted by a bases clearing triple from Hector
Hector Carreon-Herrara.
With the win Charleston improved to 41-10 on the season and tied a school record for single season wins. They will face off against the loser of the Concord and Frostburg State game, which will resume play at 10 a.m. tomorrow morning. Frostburg leads 7-6 in the top of the 12
th inning in that game.
