Baseball's Season Ends with Loss to Millersville in NCAA Tournament

Lancaster, Penn. – Charleston's baseball season came to an end on Thursday as they dropped an elimination game 6-4 to NCAA Atlantic Regional host Millersville University. It's the second consecutive season where Charleston has ended their year at Cooper Park to a PSAC team in the Atlantic Regional. The Golden Eagles finish the season 43-12, a program and conference record for wins.

Dropping the first game of the day to West Chester put the Golden Eagles in a tough spot. In an attempt to fend off elimination, they would be forced to play another nine innings against the nation's 7th best team Millersville University in hopes of advancing to another game on Saturday.

Although UC was able to hang with the Marauders early in the game, a couple of runs crossing in the bottom of the eighth inning proved to be too much to overcome for the Golden Eagles on Thursday afternoon.

Millersville struck first in the bottom of the first inning, scoring one run against starter Dwayne Sumler.

Charleston responded with their first two runs in the top of the second, but seven straight innings without a run cost the Golden Eagles a chance to advance to Saturday. Andre Martinez led off the second with a single but was cut down on a fielder's choice two batters later. UC rallied with two outs, using three consecutive singles to put two runs on the board in the second. Drew Beckner and AJ Karosas both had RBI singles in the frame.

It would be the last runs the Golden Eagles could muster up until the top of the ninth inning. Millersville, however, scored one run in the third, fifth and six innings to take a 4-2 lead after six.

Sumler worked 3.2 innings while striking out three and surrendering two runs on six hits. He was relieved by Tad Dean in the fourth and he would be the pitcher of record for the day. He allowed a run in the fifth inning that gave the Marauders a 3-2 lead that they would not relinquish.

Austin Dzierwa entered in the fifth inning with the bases and two outs but a bunt single from the Marauders ultimitaely gave them the lead at 4-3. Dzierwa was effective but did allow one unearned run in the fourth after an error on a failed pickoff attempt. He finished the day with 2.2 innings, three runs allowed (two earned) and three strikeouts.

Charleston's final pitcher, Andrew Gormley, inherited two runners in the bottom of the eighth inning, both of which came around to score after a bloop double with the bases loaded.

Trailing 6-2 in the ninth Griffin Adkins led off the inning with a double and was later brought home on a home run by Tyler Dellerman. For Dellerman, it would mark a memorable end to a storied career at the University of Charleston. He finished the season with a .373 average and 19 home runs.

Charleston tallied eleven hits in the game, but for the second straight time, left 10 or more runners on base. Clay Hale and Carter Rust both had two hits in the game and Rust scored one of Charleston's four runs.
