Baseball Closes Historic Regular Season with Split vs State, West Ties League Record for Home Runs

Institute, W. Va – The Golden Eagles concluded the regular season this weekend with a Saturday split with rival West Virginia State. After taking game one 7-0, Charleston dropped the series finale 11-6. They improved their record to an MEC best 39-9 overall and 27-5 in conference play.

Game One – Charleston 7, State 0

With the Mountain East Conference regular season title already in hand, the Golden Eagles now hoped for a sweep of the Yellow Jackets to improve their chances of securing a top two Atlantic Region ranking.

For the second time in the series, Charleston pitching combined for a complete game shutout. Dane Sykes did a bulk of the heavy lifting on the hill. The Tennessee native twirled six scoreless innings, with nine strikeouts. He allowed only four baserunners in the start and improved his strikeout total to a team best 81 for the year.

Charleston scored their first six runs of the game via the long ball. Brayden McCallister hit a solo shot to left in the second to open the scoring.

He was followed in the third inning by Griffin Adkins who hit his first career home run to bring the score to 2-0.

Andre Martinez blasted a three-run tank to left that scored Dellerman and Klaserner to put UC up 5-0.

Kyle West hit his team and MEC leading 19th homer of the season in the seventh as UC took a 6-0 lead.

Drew Beckner knocked in the first run of the game not via a home run later in the inning. He smacked a double to right field that scored Martinez and capped the scoring at 7-0.

Robby Shepherd relieved Sykes in the bottom of the seventh and slammed the door by sitting down the side in order.

Martinez and McCallister were the only two Charleston hitters with more than one knock in the game. McCallister was 2 for 4 with a home run. Martinez finished 2 for 2 with two runs, three RBI, two walks, and a home run.

Game Two – State 11, Charleston 6

UC jumped out to an early lead as they looked for a series sweep of the Yellow Jackets on Saturday. Martinez doubled home a run in the first, and was followed shortly after by Giano Zuccaro, who deposited a two-run blast to right, his seventh of the season. After the top of the first Charleston held a 3-0 advantage.

State responded well in the home half of the frame, scoring five runs off starter Ethan Soderna in the inning. Soderna was handed the loss and pitched just 0.2 innings while allowing four hits, two walks, and five earned runs. After the first State led 5-3

In the next inning AJ Karosas hit his fourth homer of the season to cut the lead down to just one.

State added two more runs in the bottom of the second. Owen MacNeil surrendered two runs (one earned), after giving up three hits while navigating two defensive errors.

Andrew Gormley entered in the third and did not allow for the next two innings. However, in the fifth, the freshman was clipped for four runs (three earned) after allowing three hits. Gormley ended his day with four strikeouts and two walks.

Clay Hale notched his eighth home run of the season in the fourth, a two-run blast that cut the lead to 7-6 at the time. But it would not be enough as the four run fifth inning gave the Yellow Jackets all the cushion they would need to take the series finale.

With the series win Charleston will head into the Mountain East Conference Tournament with a top seed in the south and a school record 39 regular season wins.
