Erie, PA – The Golden Eagles would face the Golden Bears of Kutztown University for their opening matchup. Kutztown had won the last seven matches over Charleston coming into the day, but the Golden Eagles would not back down against the 19
th ranked team in the nation.
The Basics
Location: McConnell Family Stadium
Score: UC 1, KU 1
Records: UC 0-0-1, KU 0-0-1
Within the opening stages of the match, the Golden Bears would strike early out of nowhere. In just the 4
thminute, Kutztown goalkeeper Emme Wolfel would clear the ball from her own penalty box up the field. A misplayed ball from the Charleston defense would set Kutztown up for a quick three-on-four attack. Caroline McDonald would find Lexy Endres who would find the back of the net on the one-timer for the early 1-0 lead over the Golden Eagles.
Charleston would compile three shots in the first half with the most threatening shot coming from Carina Widaur on a volley from 18 yards away that was parried away by a field player for the Golden Bears. Kutztown would take their 1-0 lead into the locker room, but Charleston was clearly knocking on the door.
Kutztown would begin the half with a goal opportunity in the 56
th minute, but Jordan Maynard would snuff the threat as she saved the close range shot from Lexy Endres, the only player with a goal in the match up to that point.
As the game came to the closing stages, the Golden Bears clearly were planning to play safe and hold onto their 1-0 as long as humanly possible, but the ball stayed on Kutztown's half of the field for majority of the half, which gave Charleston opportunities to level the game.
Kutztown would find one more opportunity to score with four minutes to go, but Caroline McDonald's shot would go just wide of the frame by a matter of inches.
With less than two minutes to go, Charleston would set up for a corner kick. Lina Jaime would play the perfect ball over the goalkeeper in the six-yard box and put it on a silver platter for Frankie Morrow to send it into the upper part of the net to level the game at 1-1.
With too little time left, neither side would be able to find the go-ahead score and the match would end in a hard-fought 1-1 draw.
