How it Happened
The Golden Eagles would start fast defensively as they would force a three-and-out to begin the game. On their opening possession after the punt from Concord, Javonte Howard would open up the scoring for Charleston as he would find Tae Marrero for a 10-yard reception into the endzone to take a 7-0 lead.
In just two games for Charleston, it has been quite clear that the defensive side of the ball will be a force to reckon with for opponents for the remainder of the year. They would force a three-and-out on every Concord drive in the first quarter, allowing for Charleston to extend the lead with 2:29 left in the quarter after Chavon Wright would burst through defenders for a 47-yard touchdown run to get the lead to 13-0.
In the second quarter, Howard would connect with Yves Bosmans for his second touchdown throw of the game to give Charleston a 20-0 lead. The defense, once more, not allowing for any free yards for Concord, forcing their fifth consecutive three-and-out. The Golden Eagles would capitalize once more on a 23-yard reception to Marrero for his second score of the game to extend the lead to 27-0.
Concord would then begin to move the ball on offense, driving all the way down to Charleston's 7-yard line. Just when it looked like the Mountain Lions would get on the board, Roderick Webb would pick-off Jack Mangel to keep the shutout alive for his first interception of the season.
Despite Charleston being backed up in their own territory, Alex Brink would fly down the field for 56 yards to get the Golden Eagles into Concord territory. Three plays later, Howard would find his fourth touchdown throw of the evening on a 20-yard connection to Niko Kausky in the endzone for the 34-0 lead.
Charleston would score one more touchdown in the half after a 40-yard flamethrower to Marquan Herron with a highlight-reel catch to make it 41-0 heading into the locker room.
Concord would fire off two quick scores to begin the second half, but Charleston would route the remainder of the game. Brink would have another long burst of 43 yards and this time would end up in the promise land giving Charleston a 48-14 advantage. The final score of the night would come from Cleadieais Alston as he bullied his way into the endzone for a 3-yard score to give Charleston the 54-14 win over the Concord Mountain Lions.
Defensively, Charleston was led by Willie Floyd and Breece Hoff who would both contribute five solo tackles in the game. Offensively, Charleston combined for nearly 600 yards of total offense, averaging 9.3 yards per play. Chavon Wright and Alex Brink would combine for 300 of those yards and two scores, while Javonte Howard crushed the air attack with 261 yards and five touchdowns.
