Golden Eagles and Yellow Jackets Draw on Homecoming Weekend

Charleston, W. Va – The Golden Eagles would finish the 2023 Homecoming Weekend with a rivalry match with the Yellow Jackets of West Virginia State. Charleston came into the match on a five-game winning streak, not dropping a single match on the year. The Yellow Jackets came in off of two wins over West Virginia Wesleyan and Davis & Elkins by a combined score of 5-1, looking to take another win 15 minutes down the road from Institute, WV.

Location: Welch Athletic Complex
Score: UC 1, WVSU 1
Records: UC 5-0-2 (4-0-1 MEC), WVSU 3-3-1 (3-3-1 MEC)

How it Happened
Right away, it was quite clear that both sides were looking to possess the ball throughout the first half and not force play that would potentially cost either side a quick goal. There would be very little attacking chances for either side in the half, as both teams combined for three shots in the first 45 minutes played at Elliott Field.

In the 30th minute, Sophia Mankowski would check into the match.

Mankowski had made several threatening crosses into the box, but Charleston was unable to find a head towards goal. Mankowski would take matters into her own hands. In the 38th minute, the Louisville Native would run full speed towards the net from the right side into the attacking third and sent a high shot over the keeper into the back left corner to take the 1-0 advantage.

In the second half, West Virginia State would put high pressure on Charleston in their own territory, looking to steal any bad pass and turn it into a goal. In the 81st minute, it appeared that Charleston would stay on track to move to six wins on the year; that was until Naomi Waithira found a lane to play Ammy Mwasambu forward towards Jordan Maynard. Maynard, as she has done multiple times successfully, would come off her line in attempt to clear away the threat, but Mwasambu would get to the ball first and find the space to give the Yellow Jackets the equalizer late in the match. With too little time left to find the go-ahead goal, the two rivals would have to settle with a 1-1 draw in their first meeting of the 2023 season.
