Charleston Grinds Out Close 73-71 Victory Over Davis & Elkins

ELKINS, W.Va.—University of Charleston Men's Basketball (13-2, 8-1 MEC) defeats Davis & Elkins College (9-7, 5-4 MEC) 73-71 in Elkins, West Virginia to extend their win streak to seven games. Senior Forward Colbert III led the Golden Eagles to victory, shooting .615 (8-13) from the floor with 21 points scored, nine rebounds and a block. With this win, UC remains tied with West Liberty University in the Mountain East Conference standings with eight conference wins and one loss.

The Basics:
Location: Elkins, W.Va.
Score: 73-71 (UCWV)

How it Happened:
A three-pointer by Davis & Elkins is how the game started, but Colbert III answered back with a basket of his own followed by two Shunta Wilson blocks and a layup by Tyler Eberhart to put Charleston ahead 4-3. The score went back-and-forth until the Senators jumped ahead 15-10 on a layup and a shot from behind the arc. The Golden Eagles found themselves falling behind for a few possessions, but a six point run with baskets from Dwaine Jones and Obinna Ugwuakazi pushed them out in front 18-17. Davis & Elkins ended up taking the lead back though, as the half ended with Charleston trailing 32-26.

To start the second half, the Golden Eagles quickly cut the deficit down to one point with a layup by Colbert III and a triple by Eberhart. UC would continue to trail until they knotted the score at 51 on buckets by DeAirius Barker and Wilson. Wilson went on to make the score 52-51 on a free throw, but the Senators stole the lead back on two free throws of their own. The lead went on to trade hands until Charleston soared to a 61-55 advantage on another six-point run with a layup, free throw and three-pointer by Colbert III. Although the Senators were able to minimize the lead to just three, they were unable to regain their momentum, giving Charleston the narrow 73-71 victory.

The Golden Eagles outscored the Senators 11-2 on second chance points, 34-20 on points in the paint and 12-6 on fast break points to secure their seventh win in a row. Colbert III led Charleston in points scored with 21, but Wilson and Ugwuakazi also had solid performances with Wilson scoring 10 points and Ugwuakazi scoring 11. Ugwuakazi shot .667 (4-6) from the floor and tallied seven rebounds, two steals, a block and an assist in 21 minutes of play.
