Golden Eagles Remain Undefeated with Win Over Frostburg State

Frostburg, MD – This matchup between the #13 Charleston Golden Eagles and the #22 Frostburg State Bobcats was the first Top 25 matchup in the Mountain East Conference that Charleston has been in since 2015. A highly anticipated matchup in front of a sold-out crowd waited for Charleston when they arrived to Bobcat Stadium on Saturday for Frostburg State's homecoming.

The Basics
Location: Bobcat Stadium
Score: UC 48, FSU 7
Records: UC 7-0 (5-0 MEC), FSU 6-1 (4-1 MEC)

How it Happened
From the first whistle until the last, the Golden Eagles were dominant in every facet of the game. Frostburg State's biggest task on Saturday was to do what no team this season has done – stop Charleston's run-game. A tough task it was, as Charleston ran for 345 yards on Saturday compared to Frostburg State's 61 yards on the ground.

Charleston scored just one touchdown in the first quarter with Chavon Wright on a short rushing touchdown, but the highlight of the first quarter, and quite possibly the moment of the game, was Charleston's goal line stop. The Bobcats had four plays to score a touchdown from Charleston's two-yard line, but the Golden Eagle defense put their hardhat on and went to work. They would hold from their own one-yard line and stuff the Bobcats in their own backfield on a 4th and goal as Cashawn Beasley picked up Frostburg State running back Owen Doyle on a short carry to secure the goal line stand.

The Golden Eagles took that momentum into the second quarter and put up 20 points of offense. They even stole an extra possession of offense in the quarter after the Charleston kickoff unit recovered a muffed kickoff, turning the possession into points after Wright's third touchdown of the day. Charleston's final score of the half was one for the highlight reel, as Thomas Ashworth secured the ball in the endzone on a diving grab from 21-yards out to extend the Charleston lead to 27-0 over the 22nd ranked team in the country going into the locker room.

Charleston came out of the second half with a slightly slower tempo of play, but it did not stop them from scoring more points as Wright would find his fourth and fifth rushing touchdown in the quarter, giving Charleston a 41-0 lead heading into the fourth quarter. The Golden Eagles continued to dominate on defense, securing an interception by Dekavis Preston and a forced fumble by Nesta Owens on a sack of 14 yards recovered by Michael Schweinefuss.

After running the ball seven times in one drive, Jadus Davis pounded his way into the endzone for his first rushing score of the season to give Charleston their final touchdown of the day, taking the 48-0 lead over Frostburg State. It wouldn't be until the 2:20 mark of the fourth quarter where the Bobcats found their first touchdown of the day, allowing for the visitors to walk away with the 48-7 victory on the road.

Up Next
Charleston will face Fairmont State this Friday night under the UC Stadium lights on October 25th at 7:00 PM. The Falcons were the only team to defeat the Golden Eagles in the regular season in 2023, making this one out to be a great contest in the later half of the year.
