West Liberty, W.Va. - The University of Charleston Golden Eagles traveled to West Liberty this past Wednesday, October 2, returning to the site where last season's MEC Regular Season Championship was clinched.
The Basics:
Location: Hilltopper Soccer Complex
Score: UC 2, WLU 0
Records: UC 8-0-1 (6-0-0 MEC), West Liberty 3-5-1 (1-5-0 MEC)
How it Happened:
The Golden Eagles had a number of shots in the first period with 13 in total, but only 3 found the target.
Joao Silva came closest to opening the scoring but the ball was deemed to be out of play beforehand. In contrast, the Hilltoppers had just five shots, but called
Nicolai Gundersen into action twice to keep the tie scoreless heading into the interval.
Into the second half and UC needed a moment of individual brilliance from Argentine Tomas Petrungaro seven minutes after the restart to break the deadlock. He found himself one versus one on the left hand side, cut inside onto his right foot and whipped his shot into the top right corner of the net, giving the keeper no chance. West Liberty didn't let the opener dishearten them, as they come ever so close to an equalizer in the 68th minute when Aidan Harvey narrowly slid an effort wide of Gundersen's right hand post.
UC eventually gave themselves breathing space in the 72nd minute. Franco Tradatti sent a free kick goalwards, which found its way into the back of the net directly from his left foot, making it 2-0 to the Golden Eagles and sealing the victory.
Up Next:
The University of Charleston stay unbeaten this season and are next in action at 4pm this Sunday, October 6 at the Welch Athletic Complex.
