Charleston Downs Hilltoppers on the Road to Improve to 6-0 in Conference Play

West Liberty, W. Va. – Charleston rose victorious in a back and forth match with West Liberty. A goal in the 85th minute from Lina Jaime would be the decider on the Golden Eagle victory.

The Basics:
Location: Hilltopper Soccer Complex
Score: UC 3, WLU 2
Records: UC 6-2 (6-0 MEC), West Liberty 2-5-1 (1-3-1 MEC)

How it Happened:
The first twenty-five minutes of play were scoreless but both teams were looking for that opening goal. The Hilltoppers broke first with a corner that curved right into the top of the goal mouth for a 1-0 lead in the 26th minute.

It did not take Charleston long to find the equalizer as Jamie Bland netted her first goal of the season. Bland found a ball that ricochet off the goalie on a Demari Curry shot and sent it into the back of the net to tie the game at 1-1.

The teams settled for a tie as they headed to the locker rooms at the half.

Entering the second half, West Liberty once again broke deadlock, scoring their second goal of the contest in the 52nd minute to take the 2-1 lead. The Golden Eagles trailed for several minutes, but in the 70th minute Demari Curry scored the equalizer.

With the game tied and the time winding down, either team was looking for an advantage. The Golden Eagles got just that as they were awarded a free kick just outside the 18-yard box on the left side. In the 85th minute Lina Jaime stepped to the spot to take the free kick and whipped a beautiful ball into the top of the goal mouth past the outreached West Liberty keeper. The goal put Charleston ahead 3-2, the Golden Eagles just needing to defend for five minutes.

Charleston would hold onto their lead and improve to 6-0 in Mountain East Conference play with the victory.
