The Basics:
Location: Wehrle Innovation Center
Score: 3-1 (L)
Records: UC 24-7 (12-3 MEC); WVSU 20-9 (14-1 MEC)
How it Happened:
Charleston (24-7, 12-3 MEC) showed promise in the first set, with senior Pia Selke leading the way. Selke tallied 10 kills and hit .368 for the match, but the Golden Eagles couldn't sustain their lead, falling 20-25.
The second set saw Charleston struggle offensively, as they only had 10 kills on 43 attacks along with 10 errors. Junior Emma Shepherd added 11 kills and two aces, but it wasn't enough to overcome the Yellow Jackets, who took the set 18-25.
The Golden Eagles found their rhythm in the third set, posting a .536 hitting percentage. Strong performances from Shepherd and Selke, along with contributions from Kate Strong and Patrycja Majos, helped Charleston secure a 25-21 win.
However, West Virginia State (20-9, 14-1 MEC) responded in the fourth set, taking advantage of Charleston's miscues. Despite nine kills from Riley Hoff and 20 assists from setter London Upchurch, the Golden Eagles dropped the set 17-25, sealing the match for the Yellow Jackets.
