Charleston, W.Va. – The Golden Eagles took 2-3 from the Mountain Cats of Pitt Johnstown. Charleston won the first two games of the series before falling in the final game on Sunday.
GAME 1
The Basics:

Score: UC 7, UPJ 2
Records: UC 9-3 (0-0 MEC), Pitt-Johnstown 5-6
How it Happened:
Charleston got on the board first in the Saturday evening nine inning contest with the Mountain Cats of Pitt-Johnstown. After walking two and committing an error to allow Hector Carreon Herrera, the Mountain Cat pitcher walked Evan Ulrich, scoring JD Armstrong from third and advancing Karosas and Carreon Herrera up a bag. The Golden Eagles plated another later in the inning after Klaserner drew another bases loaded walk to score Carreon Herrera.
Heading back out in the top of the third, Austin Dzierwa sat the Mountain Cats down in order, collecting two more strikeouts on the evening.
In the top of the fourth, Pitt-Johnstown plated a run to cut the lead to 2-1 heading into the bottom half of the inning. Charleston responded in the bottom half with a two-run blast off the bat of Drew Klaserner over the right field wall.
The Mountain Cats had a response of their own in the top of the fifth when the leadoff batter hit a solo homer to right to cut the deficit again to 4-2. Austin Dzierwa would keep the damage to a minimum, ending his evening after getting out of the inning, five complete innings of work giving up just three hits.
The rest of Charleston's run production came in the bottom of the fifth. The Golden Eagles scored three runs on three hits with the help of three Mountain Cat errors. Two failed pick-off attempts in the inning allowed Charleston runners to advance and extend the inning. Carreon Herrera, Rust, and Ulrich all collected a hit in the inning.
Trace Hartman closed things out for the Charleston on the mound. Hartman went four complete innings only allowing one hit and two walks. The Golden Eagles would take the victory over the Mountain Cats 7-2.
GAME 2
The Basics:
Location: Welch Athletic Complex
Score: UC 3, UPJ 2
Records: UC 10-3 (0-0 MEC), Pitt-Johnstown 5-7
How it Happened:
Game two of the series got underway at high noon on Sunday afternoon with Charleston's Owen MacNeil on the mound. After a three up three down for MacNeil, Charleston headed to the plate. The Mountain Cats quickly got two outs in the inning after retiring Rust and Finck, but a two out walk to Eric Chartier got things started for Charleston. JD Armstrong singled up the middle advancing Chartier to second and passing the bat to Hector Carreon Herrera. With two strikes, Carreon Herrera pieced a ball into left center, good enough for a double and an RBI scoring Chartier.
In the top of the second MacNeil allowed a hit to the first batter faced but then retired the next three batters to send his team back to the dugout. Once again for Charleston, the offense got going with two outs. Brayden McCallister started things off with a single to center field before Carter Rust sent one to deep left field for his first homerun of the 2024 season. The two-run blast gave Charleston the 3-0 advantage over Pitt-Johnstown.
Owen MacNeil kept the Mountain Cats scoreless for the next two innings, throwing four complete before ending his day on the mound. The Mountain Cats finally got on the board with a two-run shot of their own to bring the score to 3-2, Charleston still leading.
That would be all the scoring in the seven-inning contest, Charleston holding onto their lead to take it 3-2. Owen MacNeil picked up his second win of the season and Cody Godbold secured his second save of the season with two complete innings of work.
GAME 3
The Basics:
Location: Welch Athletic Complex
Score: UC 3, UPJ 10
Records: UC 10-4 (0-0 MEC), Pitt-Johnstown 6-7
How it Happened:
The Golden Eagles struggled on the mound in game three of the series, quickly finding themselves trailing 4-0 in the top of the first after allowing four walks and two hits.
The Mountain Cats tacked on two more runs, one in the fifth and one in the sixth, making the score 6-0 in favor of Pitt-Johnstown.
In the bottom of the sixth, Charleston plated one run off a Ty Foree home run to left center.
The Mountain Cats responded with two more runs in the top of the seventh to increase their lead to 8-1. In the bottom half of the inning, Charleston cut the deficit when Trace Hartman went yard for a two-run home run to left center scoring Lane Weismiller.
Pitt-Johnstown tacked on another two runs before ending the game, taking the game three victory 10-3 over Charleston.
Up Next:
Charleston will begin Mountain East Conference play this coming weekend starting with a double header at Wheeling. On Sunday, March 17
th Charleston will head to the hilltop to take on West Liberty in a double header.
