Golden Eagles Sweep Fighting Falcons for Two Conference Victories

Charleston, W.Va. – The Golden Eagles sweep the Fighting Falcons of Fairmont State 4-2 in game one and 6-3 in game two.

GAME 1

The Basics:
Location: Welch Athletic Complex
Score: UC 4, FSU 2
Records: UC 15-6 (5-2 MEC), Fairmont State 2-16 (1-6)

How it Happened:
Sunday's first game of the day got off to a hot start when freshman two-way player Trace Hartman sat the Falcons down one, two, three to send his team to bat. In the bottom half of the inning, Charleston threatened with bases loaded, but Fairmont got out of the jam unscathed, the score still 0-0.

The second and third innings were scoreless, Hartman siting the Falcons down in order not allowing a runner on the first time through the order.

In the top of the fourth, Fairmont opened the scoring with two runs. The first two batters of the inning were put on base with free passes. The next batter up singled to left field, but a bobble in the outfield allowed the runner going to third to score. With runners at second and third, the next batter up hit a grounder to the shortstop that he took home to cut down the runner trying to score from third for the first out of the inning. The next batter up was hit by a pitch, loading the bases for the Falcons. The following hitter singled to shortstop, advancing all runners up a bag, and scoring Fairmont's second run of the inning. The Golden Eagles got out of the bases loaded jam on the next play with a 4-6-3 double play to end the inning.

The game moved quickly for the next several innings, no runs crossing the plate, bringing Charleston back up to bat in the bottom of the sixth trailing 2-0. Charleston got the first two runners on after a walk and hit batter, putting the bat in Evan Ulrich's hands. Ulrich grounded into a fielder's choice, short stop to second base, putting runners on the corners for pinch hitter Casey Finck. Finck took the first pitch of the at bat and poked it into left field for a base hit and Charleston's first run of the game.

The Golden Eagles held the Falcons in the top of the seventh, heading to the plate trailing by one and three outs to work with to overcome the deficit. Drew Klaserner got things started with a leadoff single to left field, followed by a JD Armstrong single to left field. Eric Chartier attempted a sacrifice bunt to move the runners over, but the bunt was pushed back to the pitcher allowing him to get the lead runner at third, Charleston now with one out and runners on first and second. That brought to the play Hector Carreon Herrera who was entered into the game in the bottom of the sixth as a pinch runner. In dramatic fashion, Carreon Herrera blasted a three-run homer over the right field fence to walk it off for Charleston.

GAME 2

The Basics:
Location: Welch Athletic Complex
Score: UC 6, FSU 3
Records: UC 16-6 (6-2 MEC), Fairmont State 2-17 (1-7)

How it Happened:
The Golden Eagles got on the board early and often in inning one of the second game on Sunday afternoon. After retiring the side only allowing a walk in the top half of the inning, Charleston proceeded to plate five runs off four hits including the three-run jack from AJ Karosas. Hits coming from Armstrong, Li, Ulrich, and Karosas.

Despite not recording a hit, Fairmont State collected two runs of their own in the top of the second. Four free passes in a row resulted in their first run of the inning, the second coming off a sacrifice fly to right field that allowed the second run to score.

Charleston plated their sixth run of the game in the bottom of the third off an AJ Karosas bases loaded sacrifice fly to score Cody Li who walked to lead off the inning.

The Fighting Falcons once again responded in the top half of the inning with a run. A walk and two infield singles loaded the bases for Fairmont. The next batter was then hit by a pitch resulting in an RBI, Fairmont trailing 6-3.

The Falcons had opportunities in the next three innings to score, but Charleston kept Fairmont off the board, the Golden Eagles taking game two 6-3 for their sixth conference victory of the season.

Up Next:
Charleston will head to Salem on Friday, March 29th for a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 1:00PM.
