Buckhannon, W.Va. – The Golden Eagles traveled to Buckhannon, West Virginia for a four game Mountain East Conference series. Charleston defeated West Virginia Wesleyan in all four games to sweep the series and add four more wins in conference play.
GAME 1
The Basics:
Location: Hank Ellis Field
Score: UC 11, WVWV 8
Records: UC 29-7 (16-3 MEC), WV Wesleyan 10-23 (5-14 MEC)
How it Happened:
The Bobcats of West Virginia Wesleyan got ahead of the Golden Eagles in the first inning with a two-run bottom of the first off three Bobcat hits. Wesleyan allowed the first two Golden Eagles that stepped to the plate in the top of the second to reach base, but the Bobcats quickly got out of trouble and headed back to the plate unscathed. Wesleyan then tacked on two more runs in the bottom half of the inning off a two-run blast to take the early 4-0 lead.
Trailing by four, Charleston's leadoff hitter Carter Rust tripled to start the third inning. Brayden McCallister then singled to score Rust for the first Golden Eagle run of the game. Drew Klaserner kept things going with a single putting runners on the corners for JD Armstrong. Armstrong grounded out but scored the run from first, Charleston trailing 4-2 with just one out in the inning. Casey Finck continued the momentum, singling and advancing Klaserner to third allowing Eric Chartier to hit a sacrifice fly to score Klaserner. The next batter was walked giving the bat to Evan Ulrich with two outs and runners on first and second. Ulrich singled, Finck scoring from second and evening the score at 4-4.
With the ball game tied, the Bobcats quickly loaded the bases after a leadoff double and then a single and a walk with no outs. The next batter to the plate hit a ball to the shortstop, his only play being getting the runner at second, allowing a run to score. The next batter also reached on a fielder's choice to the shortstop, allowing another run to score, Bobcats ahead 6-4.
Charleston once again evened the score in the top of the fourth thanks to three hits in the inning and two Bobcat defensive errors. After Rust scored on a throwing error on a steal, Drew Klaserner doubled to bring McCallister who singled earlier in the inning home.
The fifth inning was scoreless, Charleston heading back to bat in the top of the sixth inning. With one out, Carter Rust singled and then advanced on a wild pitch before McCallister was walked. Following the double steal of Rust and McCallister, Klaserner was awarded a walk to load the bases for Armstrong. Armstrong was plunked with a pitch, allowing all runners to advance and a run to score. The bat was then passed to Casey Finck who singled and collected two RBIs, Charleston now leading 9-6.
Wesleyan plated one run in the bottom half of the inning off two hits, but Charleston tacked on two more insurance runs in the top of the seventh to extend their lead to 11-7. The Two runs came off a Brayden McCallister two-run shot that scored Karosas.
Wesleyan plated a run in the bottom of the seventh, but they could not overcome the deficit, Charleston taking the game one victory 11-8 over the Bobcats.
GAME 2
The Basics:
Location: Hank Ellis Field
Score: UC 18, WVWV 7
Records: UC 30-7 (17-3 MEC), WV Wesleyan 10-24 (5-15 MEC)
How it Happened:
Charleston struck first in game two of the afternoon, plating three runs in the top of the first on three hits. Hector Carreon-Herrera had the first RBI of the game with a double that scored leadoff hitter Drew Klaserner. Evan Ulrich then singled and collected two RBIs to give Charleston the 3-0 advantage.
The Bobcats responded with four runs on five hits and one Charleston error. The four run first inning giving the Bobcats the slight advantage over Charleston 4-3. Charleston knotted things up in the top of the second with a JD Armstrong single that scored Brayden McCallister who was walked earlier in the inning. The lone second inning hit would be enough to tie the game at 4-4.
The Bobcats once again took the lead in the bottom of the third with one run on two hits. The leadoff Bobcat doubled and then came around to score on a single two batters later. The Golden Eagles kept the damage to a minimum and got out of the inning just giving up a run to trail 5-4.
Charleston took the lead in the top of the fourth, plating three runs on four hits. Brayden McCallister got things going with a single and then advancing to second on an error by the center fielder. McCallister then advanced to third on a wild pitch and came around to score on a Drew Klaserner sacrifice fly to right field. JD Armstrong and Casey Finck then hit back-to-back singles to put runners on second and third. With two outs, Hector Carreon-Herrera singled, allowing JD Armstrong to score and Finck to advance to third. Carreon-Herrera then stole second and Casey Finck advanced home on the throw, Charleston leading 7-5 heading into the bottom half of the inning.
The Golden Eagles sat the Bobcats down in order and headed back to the plate where they plated four more runs on four hits. Casey Finck and Lane Weismiller both collected two RBIs in the inning.
Charleston tacked on an insurance run in the top of the sixth. Damian Witty got things started with a double and then Drew Klaserner brought him home with a single.
The Golden Eagles packed their final punch in the top of the seventh with six runs scored on just one hit. The Golden Eagles worked eight walks in the inning and stole four bags to take the 18-5 advantage heading into the bottom of the seventh.
The Bobcats plated two runs in the bottom half of the inning, but the deficit was too much to overcome, Charleston taking the game two victory 18-7 over West Virginia Wesleyan.
GAME 3
The Basics:
Location: Hank Ellis Field
Score: UC 12, WVWV 4
Records: UC 31-7 (18-3 MEC), WV Wesleyan 10-25 (5-16 MEC)
How it Happened:
Charleston quickly jumped out ahead of Wesleyan in Sunday's first game, plating five runs on six hits. Hits coming from McCallister, Finck, Armstrong, Carreon-Herrera, Ulrich, and Karosas. The Bobcats plated a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning on a sacrifice fly to score the leadoff batter.
In the top of the third, Charleston scored their sixth run of the ballgame on an Evan Ulrich single that scored JD Armstrong who also had a hit in the inning.
The Golden Eagles added on another five runs in the top of the fourth on five hits. Klaserner, McCallister, and Finck all started the inning with consecutive singles, Casey Finck collecting an RBI as Drew Klaserner scored. Hector Carreon-Herrera then singled with one out to score two more Charleston runners and extend the lead to 9-1. Lane Wiesmiller hit a sacrifice fly later in the inning to plate another run. The final run of the inning came off a Damian Witty which scored Evan Ulrich from third.
Charleston scored their final run of the game in the top of the fifth, JD Armstrong collecting the RBI with a groundout to the second baseman that advanced Brayden McCallister home.
The Bobcats were down to their final three outs in the bottom of the seventh and had an eleven-run deficit to try and overcome. The Bobcats plated three runs on four hits but eventually fell to Charleston 12-4.
GAME 4
The Basics:
Location: Hank Ellis Field
Score: UC 6, WVWV 4
Records: UC 32-7 (19-3 MEC), WV Wesleyan 10-26 (5-17 MEC)
How it Happened:
In game four of the series, Charleston struck first, scoring three runs in the top of the first inning. Charleston's first run came by way of the long ball from Brayden McCallister. Casey Finck then reached on an error by the shortstop and advanced to third on JD Armstrong's single. Hector Carreon-Herrera then grounded out to first base but collected an RBI as Casey Finck advanced home. The final run of the inning was scored on an Evan Ulrich single that scored Armstrong.
Charleston scored their fourth run of the game in the top of the third inning. Casey Finck led things off with a triple, followed by back-to-back walks from Armstrong and Carreon-Herrera to load the bases for Evan Ulrich. Ulrich grounded into a 6-4-3 double play, but Casey Finck scored on the play to take the 4-0 advantage over the Bobcats.
In the bottom half of the inning, Wesleyan got two hits with two outs to put runners on second and third. The next batter hit a ball to third, but an unfortunate error for Charleston caused Wesleyan to score their first run of the game.
In the top of the sixth, Charleston scored their final two runs. Witty and Klaserner started the inning off with consecutive hits. Moments later after Drew Klaserner stole second, a wild pitch allowed Witty to Score and Klaserner to advance to third. Casey Finck later hit a fly ball to center field that sent Klaserner home for Charleston's sixth run.
In the bottom of the sixth inning the Bobcats scored three runs on two hits and a Charleston error. The three runs would be the final runs of the game, Charleston taking the 6-4 victory and Trey Ritchie collecting the save for Charleston.

The Golden Eagles will host the Mountain Lions of Concord University for a four game MEC series. The first two games will be played on Friday evening starting at 5:00PM. The next two games will be a Sunday afternoon double header starting at 1:00PM.
