UC Softball Punches Ticket to NCAA Super Regionals & Coach Frew Tallies 1,000th NCAA Win

CHARLESTON, W. VA.—No. 3 seeded and No. 9 nationally ranked University of Charleston Softball punches their ticket to the NCAA Atlantic Super Regional after defeating No. 3 seeded West Chester University (36-22) twice in the NCAA Atlantic Regional Championship. With these wins, Head Coach Michelle Frew also notched her 1,000th NCAA career victory.

The Basics:
Location: UC Softball Field
Score: G1: 8-6 (W), G2: 7-1 (W)

How it Happened:
Game One: 8-6 (W)
Charleston's bats were hot in game one, as the Golden Eagles out hit the Golden Rams 14-11. Hannah Rose led the game off with a solo shot to center field to quickly put UC ahead 1-0 in the first. UC knocked two more hits but was unable to bring any more runs across that inning.

Chloe Elliott (11-0) shutdown West Chester's half of the first inning, but they managed to knot the game at one in the bottom of the second after they loaded the bases and scored on a fielder's choice. Another fielder's choice put an end to the inning and handed the bats back over to UC.

The top of the third inning was a big one for the Golden Eagles. A double by Isabella Andujar got it going again for UC. The junior came all the way around to score after advancing to third and then home on a pass ball and a single by Lindsey Phares to give UC the lead again. With two runners on following Phares' single and a walk by Bianca Polistina, Allison Rubal loaded the bases on a hit to right field before West Chester's pitcher took care of the second out on a strikeout swinging. From there, Raegan West broke the game open on a bases clearing double down the left field line to put UC up 5-1. The Golden Rams got their final out a strikeout looking.

Elliott had another 1-2-3 inning in the fourth inning before her teammate Hannah Meyer drilled a three-run bomb over the right field fence to conclude their scoring for the game. Elliott allowed one hit in the bottom of the fifth, but the score remained at 8-1 through the top of the sixth before things got interesting in the bottom of the sixth inning.

UC got a goose egg to start the inning, however a walk, single and a sacrifice fly put runners on second and third for the Golden Rams. With bases loaded following another free pass, a knock plated two more runs to cut the lead in half before the inning ended on a ground out to third base.

Charleston could not produce any more runs in the seventh inning, but the Golden Rams added two more in their half to shrink the lead to just two. With one out West Chester plated a run on two more singles, a fielder's choice and a muffed throw by UC's second baseman. Their final run came via a sacrifice fly, but Elliott struck out her fourth Golden Ram of the day to secure the final out and her eleventh win of the season.

Game Two: 7-1 (W)
Just like in game one, Charleston scored first in the first inning on a home run, but this time as the home team and off the bat of Lake. With one out, the super-senior blasted it to left center, which plated two runs for UC, as Rose doubled to lead off the game. Charleston left a Golden Eagle stranded though with the Golden Rams securing the final two outs on a pair of ground outs to third base.

Sophomore Addison Mass (4-1) was lights out in the circle through six innings. Neither team could get the bats going in the second inning, but another home run by Rose put up another run up for UC in the third. Andujar then doubled and scored their last run of the inning on a single by Lake.

Mass had another three-up, three-down inning in the fourth before Charleston scored three more in the bottom half of the inning. Brittny Ogg started a two-out rally with a single to right field. Rose also picked up a hit deep in the 5-6 hole to put two runners on for UC. The senior passed the bat to Andujar who also joined the home run club with a bomb to left field to make it 7-0, UC.

The score remained at 7-0 until West Chester finally broke through in the seventh inning on a lead off home run to left field. Mass locked right back in though with a fly out, strikeout and ground out to end the game.
