CHARLESTON, W.VA.—No. 9 nationally ranked and No. 3 seeded University of Charleston (50-5, 27-3 MEC) defeats the No. 4 seeded Kutztown University (36-24, 19-13 PSAC) 5-1 in game one of the NCAA Atlantic Super Regional to pick up their 50
th win of the season.
This is the second time in program history that the Golden Eagles have reached the 50-win mark, and it is the most wins Head Coach Michelle Frew has had in a single season in her 33 years of coaching. This is also the first time in program history that Charleston has hosted super regionals. With this victory, UC is just one game away from punching their ticket to the NCAA Division II College World Series.
The Basics:
Location: UC Softball Field
Score: 5-1
How it Happened:
Kutztown led the game off with a single down the left field line, but their offense was quickly shutdown after Chloe Elliott (12-0) struck out a Golden Bear while catcher Hannah Meyer gunned out the runner trying to swipe second to put two outs on the board. The final out of the inning came via another strikeout to hand the bats over to the Golden Eagles.
Charleston's offense started off hot and it never cooled off. A pair of back-to-back doubles by Senior Hannah Rose and Junior Isabella Andujar plated the first run of the game. Andujar currently leads the MEC in doubles with 19. Kutztown then got two outs on a foul out to second and a pop up to third, but a single up the middle by Junior Allison Rubal scored Andujar from second. Rubal also made it back around to home plate after a Bianca Polistina double made the score 3-0. A foul out concluded the inning.
The Golden Bears led their half of the second off with a walk, however they were unable to capitalize as Elliott got the next three outs on two fly outs to center field and a soft liner to shortstop. The Golden Eagles managed to put another run up in their half though, as Rose blasted her tenth home run of the season to center field before Kutztown got out of the inning.
Both teams went scoreless in the third before Meyer added another run for UC on a solo shot to left field, making the score 5-0. Elliott continued to be lights out in the circle for the Golden Eagles until the top of the seventh inning. The Golden Bears led it off with a single to center field and a single to left field to put runners in scoring position. A fielder's choice then put runners on the corners for Kutztown before another fielder's choice allowed for a run to score and put an end to the shutout. A ground out to the third baseman in Brittny Ogg finalized the score at 5-1, UC.
The Golden Eagles out-hit the Golden Bears 8-5 with Rose leading the offense with two hits in three at bats, a home run, a double, two runs scored and an RBI. Elliott notched her 12
th win of the season with four strikeouts.
