Charleston Collects Third Clean Sheet of the Season with Victory Over Point Park

Charleston, W.Va. - The University of Charleston Golden Eagles welcomed Point Park Pioneers to the Welch Athletic Complex on Wednesday night for their Mountain East Conference home opener. Before the game, a moment of silence was held in honor of those affected by the events on 9/11/2001.

The Basics:
Location: Welch Athletic Complex
Score: UC 1, PPU 0
Records: UC 2-0-1 (2-0-0 MEC), Point Park 1-2-0 (0-2-0)

How it Happened:
UC began the game with intent and intensity, registering their first shot on target after just 72 seconds, before producing another 7 shots within the first 13 minutes. The breakthrough came in the 33rd minute when Sam Newell found Caio Moraes with a pass over the top, with Moraes taking it down brilliantly before firing past a helpless Pioneers keeper. The Golden Eagles kept the pressure on for the rest of the first half, having 13 shots in total before the break.

Into the second half, Point Park had their best opportunity of the game within two minutes of the restart. Finn Syson latched onto a loose ball, covering half the field with the goal in his sights, only for Golden Eagles goalkeeper Nicolai Gundersen to come up trumps and thwart him with a great save with his left arm. This ended up being the Pioneers' only shot of the game, whilst Charleston registered another 6, 3 of those on target, but couldn't muster up a second goal.

The scoreline finished 1-0 to the hosts in front of a packed Welch Athletic Complex, leaving the Golden Eagles with a record of 2-0-1 (2-0 MEC) for the season, with Point Park Pioneers still looking for their first conference point of the season (1-2-0, 0-2 MEC).

Up Next:
The University of Charleston will be back in action this Sunday, September 15 vs West Virginia Wesleyan College at the Welch Athletic Complex, with kick off scheduled for 4pm.
