Charleston, W.Va. - The University of Charleston Golden Eagles welcomed West Virginia Wesleyan College to the Welch Athletic Complex on Sunday September 15.
The Basics:
Location: Welch Athletic Complex
Score: UC 3, WVWC 2
Records: UC 3-0-1 (3-0-0 MEC), West Virginia Wesleyan 1-2-0 (1-2-0 MEC)
How it Happened:
The Golden Eagles dominated the first half from a shots stand point, with nine in total and six on target, in contrast to the visitors who could not muster up a single shot.
Juan Hermoso broke the deadlock just before the half hour mark; he started the move himself by committing a Wesleyan defender on the dribble and playing the ball out to the right hand side to
Ethan Stewart.
Stewart put a low cross into the area and
Michail Tselios got a slight touch on it before it landed at the feet of
Hermoso who swept it into the bottom left corner with a good finish. The scoreline remained 1-0 until half time.
Into the second half and Charleston doubled their lead in the 57th minute when Sam Newell broke a line to find Caio Moraes, who turned and played a through ball for Joao Belmudes to toe poke first time into the bottom left corner, finishing off a fine move. The two goal lead did not last long for the hosts however, as 13 seconds after the restart Casey Bunker pulled one back for the Bobcats. Following this, their tails were up and Wesleyan found their equalizer at the 75 minute mark, with Chiedozie Ozo-Undeze capitalizing on a UC error at the back to tuck it home for 2-2. There was bedlam on the sideline as the Bobcats thought they had earned themselves a point on the road, only for Golden Eagles captain Tristen Rose to spoil the party with a bullet header from a Michail Tselios corner to put the hosts in front once again.
The game finished 3-2 to the University of Charleston to take them to 3-0 in the MEC, and 3-0-1 overall. This was also the program's 50th win at the Welch Athletic Complex since it's opening in 2019, and this amazing feat was achieved in just 51 games.
