Elkins, W.Va. -The University of Charleston Golden Eagles traveled to Davis & Elkins Senators on Wednesday afternoon for a Mountain East Conference matchup, looking to add a fourth win out of four in the MEC.
The Basics:
Location:Â Nuttall Field
Score:Â UC 1, D&E 0
Records:Â UC 4-0-1Â (4-0-0 MEC), Davis & Elkins 3-1-1 (1-1-1 MEC)
How it Happened:
The Golden Eagles dominated the ball in the first period, keeping the ball in the Senators' defensive half for large spells, but they could only muster up three shots with two of those being on target. The best chance of the half for the boys in maroon fell to the feet of
Jose Suarez Monaco after he was slipped in by
Stafford Dowling. Looking to give the keeper the eyes in the 21st minute,
Suarez Monaco dragged the shot wide of the left post. As for D&E, their best chance came in the 38th minute on the counter attack from a UC corner, with Modou Faye heading wide at the back post.
Into the second half and Charleston had a penalty appeal waved away, with the ball looking to strike a D&E hand. The referee originally pointed to the spot but in the end decided it was a corner instead. The Golden Eagles continued their hunt for the breakthrough, having another five shots in the second half, and they finally found their reward in the 83rd minute. Tomas Muller crossed from the endline on the left hand side and Jose Suarez Monaco nodded it down for UC's number 9 Jack Kay to sweep in the game winner.
UC kept their fourth clean sheet of the season as the game finished 1-0 to the visitors.
