A Belmudes Double Sends the ‘WAC Wednesday’ Crowd into Rapture

Charleston, W.Va. - The #4 University of Charleston Golden Eagles welcomed #15 Concord to the Welch Athletic Complex this past Wednesday in a Mountain East Conference match up.

The Basics:
Location: Welch Athletic Complex
Score: UC 2, CU 1
Records: UC 7-0-1 (5-0-0 MEC), Concord 4-1-1 (4-1-1 MEC)

How it Happened:
The hosts had their first shot on target in the 11th minute when Joao Belmudes skidded one towards the near post but the Mountain Lions keeper had it covered. It was a tight affair throughout the first period, with both keepers making saves but Charleston led the shots count 7-2 going into half time. Neither team were able to break the deadlock before half time, although Juan Hermoso thought he opened the scoring with a header but the assistant referee had his flag up.

Into the second half and the game was beginning to heat up with some big tackles flying in from both sides. The Golden Eagles were beginning to put their stamp on the game and in the 54th minute, they got their reward when Juan Hermoso found Joao Silva with a through ball down the right hand side. Silva wrapped his foot around it to send it into the area, and although it was slightly behind him, Joao Belmudes rose to score a fantastic header, clipping the post on the way into the bottom right-hand corner to send Charleston into the lead.

Six minutes later, the score was level once again when Ignacio Alvarez Maina found Richard Henry who slotted the ball home past Nicolai Gundersen to send the traveling away support wild. It set up an intense finale with UC looking for the winner, and in the 88th minute they found it. Sam Newell played a long diagonal into the path of Jack Kay, who showed great composure to get the ball across the six-yard area. After a couple of deflections, the ball fell to man of the moment, Joao Belmudes, who toe poked the ball into the bottom left corner to send the WAC into ecstasy. There were terrific scenes from the home support in the bleachers and Belmudes made sure he shared the moment with them all.

Up Next:
