How It Happened
The match kicked off with intensity fitting of a top-tier MEC showdown. Charleston got off to a promising start, registering the first two shots of the night. Fairmont State responded with four of their own, the best of which came in the 24th minute, forcing a big save from UC goalkeeper Ines Degli Esposti to keep the score level. Strong defensive efforts on both sides kept the game scoreless heading into halftime.
The second half opened with a shift in momentum, as Charleston came out aggressive and in control. That pressure paid off in the 60th minute. After a UC corner kick and a partial clearance by a Fairmont defender, freshman Allison Freese struck from 30 yards out, sending a high shot over the keeper and into the net, her first career goal for the Golden Eagles.
However, the Falcons responded quickly and decisively. In the 67th minute, Fairmont State equalized with a long-range effort of their own. Just three minutes later, they took the lead, then added a third goal in the 73rd minute off a well-placed header to put the game out of reach.
Fairmont outshot Charleston 19-8 on the night, showcasing their attacking depth and composure in the final third.
