Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Connor Hartwell

Suarez Monaco, Newell Make it 100 Not Out for the Gaffer

Elkins, W.Va. - The University of Charleston Golden Eagles travelled to Davis & Elkins this Sunday for a Mountain East Conference matchup.

The Basics:
Location: Nutall Field
Score: UC 2, D&E 0
Records: Charleston 10-0-3 (7-0-2 MEC) Davis & Elkins 6-4-3 (5-4-2 MEC)

How it Happened:
The game began at a fast pace, and the best chance of the half fell to the Senators as a good strike from the edge of the area hit Konstantinos Parisis' left hand post. The Golden Eagles had a penalty shout turned down late in the half when Jose Suarez Monaco fell after a collision, but going in at half time the deadlock hadn't been broken.

Into the second half and Charleston began to get a grip of the game. Tomas Petrungaro blazed over their first shot of the game, and then in the 62nd minute, they got the breakthrough. Mattia Marini was released down the left hand side and was fouled just outside the area. Suarez Monaco stepped up and whipped the free kick into the left hand side of the Senators net for the 1-0 lead. The Golden Eagles started to enjoy themselves in a stop start game and in the 75th minute doubled their tally. A short corner routine involving Franco Tradatti and Leonardo Dutra found Sam Newell, and his brilliant curling effort from 25 yards out gave the Senators keeper no chance, kissing the post on the way in. Charleston managed the game well for the final 15 minutes and came away with a well deserved victory, as well as Head Coach Daniel Smee's 100th win in charge of the program!

Up Next:
Next up for the Golden Eagles is the visit of Frostburg State, scheduled for this Wednesday October 22, at 7pm.
