Golden Eagles Fall 1–0 in Home Rematch Against Wesleyan

Charleston, W.Va. – It was time for a rematch between the University of Charleston and West Virginia Wesleyan, this time on UC's home turf at the Welch Athletic Complex. The Golden Eagles had taken the previous meeting in Buckhannon with a 3–2 victory, but the Bobcats flipped the script in this one.

The Basics
  • Location: Welch Athletic Complex
  • Final Score: UC 0, WVW 1
  • Records: Charleston (6-6-3, 5-4-3 MEC), West Virginia Wesleyan (7-5-2, 5-6-1 MEC)
How It Happened
The match opened at a cautious pace, with both sides testing each other in the early minutes. Around the 10th minute, Ciara Casamento created two promising chances for UC, one forcing a save and the other missing the target. After that, the Bobcats began to take control, keeping possession and pinning the Golden Eagles deep in their own half for much of the first period. UC goalkeeper Ines Degli Esposti made four key saves to keep her team in it, but a late scramble off a corner kick in the 44th minute led to Wesleyan's opening goal. The Golden Eagles went into halftime trailing 1–0.

Charleston came out determined after the break, pressing for an equalizer. The first 20 minutes of the second half were tightly contested, with both teams fighting for midfield control. Around the 65th minute, Alyssa LoGuercio and Anna Gregor each tested the Wesleyan keeper with back-to-back shots, but she stood firm. UC kept up the pressure late, and Mya Mills came inches away from leveling the score with just four minutes left. However, the Bobcats' keeper came up big again, preserving the shutout and securing the 1–0 victory for Wesleyan.

With the loss, Charleston moves to 6-6-3 overall and 5-4-3 in Mountain East Conference play.

Up Next
