Golden Eagles Get Three Points in 4-0 Victory Over Bobcats

Charleston, W.Va. - The University of Charleston Golden Eagles welcomed West Virginia Wesleyan to the WAC this past Sunday for a Mountain East Conference matchup. Eleven student-athletes within the program were celebrated on graduate day before the game.

The Basics:
Location: Welch Athletic Complex
Score: UC 4, WVWC 0
Records: Charleston 12-0-3 (9-0-2 MEC) WV Wesleyan 3-9-3 (2-8-2 MEC)

How it Happened:
Charleston started on the front foot and didn't let up for the full 90 minutes. Within the first 22 minutes, they had seven shots and seven corners, but were unable to capitalize until a minute later when Joao Silva was brought down in the Bobcats area and the referee pointed to the spot. Leonardo Dutra stepped up and smashed it past Marciani in net to put the Golden Eagles 1-0 up. A mass number of shots followed before half time, with the best chances falling to Mattia Marini, Sam Newell, and Tomas Petrungaro, but the team in white went into half time just the one goal ahead after having 21 shots, conceding zero down the other end.

Into the second half and the Golden Eagles came out the blocks quickly again, but Jose Suarez Monaco was unable to put his strike on target twenty seconds after the restart. He had another chance five minutes later, as did Martin Echarren. And then Leo Dutra hit the bar. Finally, in the 54th minute, the Golden Eagles doubled their lead. Dutra's woodwork effort was cleared and Sam Newell rose highest to head into the path of Suarez Monaco who chested and swiveled on the turn to finish into the bottom left corner. In the 79th minute, Mikael Dawit was played over the top by Joao Silva and was brought down by an onrushing Marciani. Caio Moraes stepped up and converted UC's second penalty of the game to make it 3-0. The Golden Eagles weren't done there as Tomas Muller was found by Franco Tradatti, and he squared it across the six yard area for Denys Verbinskyi to slot home for his second of the season. Verbinskyi had another opportunity late on but it was saved by Marciani. The Golden Eagles finished the game having had 31 shots and 12 corners, in comparison to one of each for the Bobcats.
