Golden Eagles Come from Behind to Defeat Hilltoppers

West Liberty, W.Va. - The University of Charleston Golden Eagles travelled to West Liberty this past Wednesday for a Mountain East Conference matchup.

The Basics:
Location: West Family Sports Complex
Score: UC 2, WLU 1
Records: Charleston 13-0-3 (10-0-2 MEC) West Liberty 5-7-4 (3-6-3 MEC)

How it Happened:
It was a fairly quiet affair to begin proceedings, with both teams having a couple of shots within the first twenty minutes, but neither really testing keepers. The breakthrough came for the Hilltoppers in the 25th minute when a direct ball over the top of the UC defense from Travis Scandalis found Alex Watt and he rounded Konstantinos Parisis before slotting home. Charleston had one half chance before half time But Martin Echarren couldn't flick a Caio Moraes free kick goalwards, and so West Liberty went into the interval a goal to the good.

Into the second half and UC had a couple of shots but none that tested Shai'ya Fitzgerald. Eventually, they levelled the scoreline. In the 62nd minute, Martin Echarren found Joao Silva on the right hand side and his shot got a slight deflection, wrong footing the Hilltoppers keeper and ending up in the back of the net. The Golden Eagles continued to push for a winner, with Suarez Monaco and Newell having chances but not hitting the target, and Verbinskyi's header from a Muller cross was saved well. With two minutes to go, they found the winner. Tomas Petrungaro played Sam Newell down the left hand side and his cross was eventually fell to the feet of Leo Dutra, and he slotted home into the bottom left corner to give Charleston all three points.

Up Next:
The Golden Eagles travel to Point Park next for their penultimate MEC contest this coming Monday November 3, scheduled for a 1pm kick off.
